    16.5 inch barrel 1-8 twist or 1-12

    hey guys
looking at the bergara takedown .308 as it comes with 16.5 inch barrel at 1-8 twist as apposed to buying a scout that is 20 inches at 1-12 twist and cutting it down to 16.5 inches, looking at reloading and i'm new to reloading so what would be a better choice?

1-8 seems helluva fast for a .308 and unnecessary unless you're shooting 240 gr MatchKings.
1-12 should be about right for 150 and 165 gr projectiles.
Better to overstabilize than understabilize though. Get the Takedown.

yeah thats what i thought 1-8 is fast would it still shoot 120s ok ? dont think i'd ever go up to 240 thats huge! although working up a sub sonic round would be cool, dont you tend to go heavy and slow for that ? but hoestly my range would likely be 120-165 max i think just for deer really

1-12 is what you want for 120-165gr (i.e. standard .308 win hunting bullets).

The 1-8, is specifically for subsonic ammo shooting really heavy bullets. with a big arse suppressor. Probably over spin light bullets like 120-130gr.

at first i thought you must have confused the twist with the blackout barrels . . . but your dead right

.308 Bergara Scout Stainless/Synthetic Single Shot Rifle

if you're a reloader with a sense of adventure i would go with the 1-8 no contest . . but then i prefer big heavy bullets . . . i am going to have a good look at these rifles in 308W

    cheers . . . R

also i'd be weary of that link you posted http://www.bergararifles.com/upload/...016%20BA13.pdf scout says only 1-12 on the takedown model however it says 1-8 but only in the 16.5 inch length http://www.bergararifles.com/upload/...13TDT_SYNT.pdf

With one in 12 you can still shoot 150 gr cast bullets sub sonics accuratly. So it won't be a big mistake if you were going with that twist rather than 1 in 8".
