Yeah $1250 with the suppressor is a good price. Nikkos are decent enough for what they cost, I have a couple but Weavers are much nicer.

honestly for that price throw the rings and scope on a 22, or at a wall.
I asked if it was cheeper without and they politely said no that is how they come from the importer
I love the fact that they thread them before they leave, that is a golden sales trick but also damn handy down the road when its time to suppress it
I do a lot of hunting with the 17HMR. I've done some penetration tests with it so have a fair idea what it can and can't do.
It'd be pretty cruel to even try on a goat with the 17 grain jelly tips. The bullet probably couldn't even make it far through the thick hair of a billy. They basically weld themselves flat and distinigrate if you hit something, hard or soft. The 17 grain can't make it through thin check-plate steel at 100m, but the 20 grainers sail right through (that's the difference in bullet construction).
Given the huge amount they are effected by even a light breeze, headshots are a bad idea. The 20 grain hollow points will make it through the skull easily... but the old saying "Use enough gun" is always applicable. Did you say you had a 6.5? Perfect for goats!
Regarding the Howa's, I reckon they're a pretty good value buy. I've shot one. Very nearly bought one (but got talked into a Savage 14 American). Given they're already threaded... that saves you $100. Good value guns, nice and short and easy to handle, and they shoot pretty well too. I'm a bit of a fan of those Hogue stocks too. You could do a lot worse than a Howa :)
Yeah I have a 6.5 but I dont hunt goats much, I cull them more then anything so ammo has to be cheap.
Other option would be to get a hreaded barrelled action and get everything else separately eg.
Threaded blued .223 action $660
Boyds Stock including shipping $170
Bases & Rings $120
Scope $up to what you want, would replace the Nikko anyway
Suppressor $depends what you want
Could end up with a great rifle for not much more than the package?
yeah factory ammo is $2.90 a round. I have 200 rounds(under that now) kept most brass but lost a few when shooting the odd deer. But from now on I will be more careful to keep it so I can reload :)
is the 308 the same deal?
iv got a boyds on my remmy that is a great stock, that would make a slick hunting package
when you mean "they" who do you mean?
H&F, Reloaders, Serious shooters, Stirling Sports, Gun City and I assume Gunworks as they are selling the packages? They are distributed here by Cameron Sports.
Check out Howas agent site to see what they have
Howa Barreled Actions
24 inch 204 heavy barrel. now your talking.
thanks for that spud attack, you have spurred me on to another un needed project that I dont have space in the cabnet for :D
223 howa from gunworks, complete package is probably sweetest new deal on right now, and you know you're getting Robbie's service and backup.
a mate of mine has one and im jelouse as of it. they are a sweet package
a sweet heavy pig of a package
its allways handy to have one around incase you blow a truck axle
Yep Model 12-VLP, 10lb bare I think plus the 5-15x50 on top of it. Even the bolt felt heavy! Lovely thing to fire from a bipod though, rock steady.
I did use it for a goat hunt once, that was the day I decided to sell it.
sold mine too - was a 204, very accurate and nice to shoot - just not nice to carry - and mine had a MAE suppressor and Nightforce attached to it
Just a lack of long range bunnies up here - so it was sold
Well that's why I reckon a little 17 hornet would be choice :) For most of the property types I shoot on anyway.
A rifle that's not much bigger than the HMR, with an extra 100m on it. Realistically the range would probably be 250 meters... not much more.
People say the HMR is a 200m round... but it's not really (the wind effects the little round so much, and in my experience it runs out of punch out that far). People are saying the hornet will be a 300m round... but I am skeptical.
I may be just trying to justify another firearm purchase... given I have a 17HMR and a 223 I don't need it... but you guys surely understand, if we can find some way to justify buying a gun, no matter how silly, it's a good enough reason :P
Just buy it, you know you want to. I said that to my mate last night he is now a proud owner of a Tikka .300WinMag :D
that is going to be a very booty package. I hope he likes recoil
It has a suppressor so I hope that does something to help.
that will do a heap to tame it
back to the 17 varmit thread have you guys seen this?
Sako L461 .17 Mach IV | Trade Me

Yep, you are talking half inches to 0.8inches in trajectory out to 400 which is more academic than anything else, now throw up the energy at those distances and the .223 is leagues ahead.
Then take into account that you have only looked at 1 bullet weight, for example the .223 40gr smokes that trajectory to 400!

Not sure what you are getting at?
The problem I find with the 17 projectiles you have quoted is they are to soft for any thing bigger than rabbits, hare and foxes. To get better penetration a non plastic tip projectile like berger or 25gn hornardy hollow points is required. This is what I have learned over many years of using a 17 ackley hornet and a 17 rem
My mate who uses a .222 and 40gn plastic tipped projectile has the same penetration issues, so its not only about cal but bullet construction, but he likes the flatter trajectory Cheers Ackley
