    17 Hornet

Have we had a thread on the 17 Hornet
I've looked but can't find one.

    What do people think?
    Is it accurate, consistantly
    Who owns one?
    Is it going to survive?
    What is is capabilities?
Apart from Ruger and CZ does anyone else make one
Apart from Hornady does anyone else make ammo

I've had one for a few months now, I'm freakin loving it. It's a CZ527 Anerican. I got it 2nd hand from @southernman. He still has a 527 Varmint.

There's a few others on here that have them as well that I'm aware of. @Happy and @Philipo also have CZ527's and love them too, as I spoke with each of them before I got mine.

Amaising performance for the size of the case/bullet. I'm handloading with 20gr ZMax handloads at 3750 fps with CFEBLK. It's a bloody laser beam to 200 yards.

I shot 50 odd rabbits over over weekend with it out to 200 yards. Any misses would be me not the rifle. It's a devastating round.

It's accurate, more so that the 17hmr imo but that may depend on the individual rifles eh.

No recoil so you can watch your hits in the scope which I find quite rewarding. It's an epic fun round and I like the CZ 527.

I believe Anshutz are chambering for 17 Hornet now.

Have read the 17 Hornet is the improved 17 cal round to have - better than the 17wsm which is not proving so successful. Anyone up to date on this?

    Delightful little weapon..

Yep Gunworks in Chch had dies in stock.

I got the hornady dies with the sliding sleeve on the seater and I highly recommend that for this little cartridge. I reckon without the sliding sleeve itd be a whole lot trickier seating bullets.

I think another worthy cartridge would be the 17 Fireball, like the 17 Hornet, it too started life as the wildcat 17 Mach IV.

There are threads on the 17 Ackley Hornet and the 17 Hornady Hornet in the past. I have a 17AH built on a BRNO 465. Had it for about 15 years. Excellent cartridge. Relatively easy to load using the standard components but use one of the harder SRP or you will get punctured primers. Bullets are now available locally. I had to import bullets from the USA (when you could). Best brass is Privi or if you can get it, RWS, if you want to reload for your 17 Hornet of whichever flavour. I use 40 years old IMR4064 for 3,400ft/sec using the 25gn HP Hornady or Remington bullet (obsolete). This is a mild load which can be reloaded more than 20 times in a case before the case wears out. I have a container of CFEBLK to try, as it is the new wunderkind powder for the 17 Hornet. If you have any interest in this cartridge then check out Saubier.com for everything you want to know and more.

Just compared my 17H 20gr load to my 55gr 223 load doing 3200 fps.

In a 5 mph full value cross wind at 200 yds the 223 has 2.4 inches of drift, the 20gr from the 17H needs 2.8 inches. So .4 inches more.

Savage, Anschutz, cooper also make the .17 hornet, I've got thousands of rounds threw both of my CZ now, @GWH just bought the American,
Great small game round, cheap to run, as long as you don't loose brass, I am up over ten loads, on sum brass, N120, 4227, Blackout, 1680, and H4198 are the better powders, I've tried, N120 and black out, the best for accuracy, speed and metering, threw powder meter.
I run 12.5gr blackout, for the 20gr with WSR or CCI 400 for 3700 and about 1/2 to 3/4", point and shoot to 200m, 25gr hit with much more attuhorty and the whump from impact, is very noticeable.
I also have a .17 Mack IV (fireball), In NZ, this is my most accurate rifle, a Sako L48, its pushing the 25gr v-Max at 3800fps, love it, adds another 100m to the sensible range,300-350ish. and much better in windy conditions,
The small Cal, Varminting type rifles are lots of fun, reasonable cheap, to get up and running, they get lots of shooting. Ive got several, .17 hornet, .17 fireball, 20 vartarg, 6x45, 6x47rem. (.222 rem mag )
I doubt you be disappointed in a CZ
