    17 Hornet. Thoughts?

I’m considering getting a 17 Hornet for something a bit different. I know that we can only seem to get CZ’s and Savage’ in that caliber currently. And I know that factory ammo is really limited and expensive. And I know that I may be better to just stick with a .223
BUT.... I’m still keen to look into one. Has anyone here got one or used them before?
What are your thoughts on them???
    Keen to know.
    Cheers

Ruger do one as well. You sound just like me, I got one anyway despite all that. I love mine and dont plan on getting rid of it. Its point and shoot all day long. If you reload that's a bonus too. My lesser calibres just live in the cupboard now.

Ohh that would be the dream. I already have a 1770 in .223 and it is amazing! A .17 Hornet would be great too

Wow - good to know! I’ll do some research on the Rugers. Is yours suppressed? The rumour is they are reasonably quiet for such a fast centre fire...

@JohnQT Weihrauch make a couple of different bolt action rifles in.17 Hornet. My Weihrauch 22 Hornet and 22 LR are both tack drivers. They also make a double set trigger as an option.

I had a savage heavy barrell suppressed in 17 hornet. Excellent calibre for rabbits ,magpies ect. Factory ammo crono'ed at 3650 as advertised and grouped when calm and off sandbags at 25mm at 180 metres. Couldn't get handloads to go faster than 2900 and i tried all that was on the net so stuck to factory. Hit a maggi or plover and you get a satisfying puff of feathers. Great for small blocks

Mine is supressed yep, soft shooting and quiet. I'm sure Volquhartsen(query spelling) were doing one but never followed that up seriously. Someone on here brought that Anshcutz that reloaders had after I tipped them off if I recall. Was very pricey, but worth it I'm sure. I reloaded some the other day but had some issues with primer leakage, factory ammo shoots well but the reloads shot waaaay better. Still have some work to do however. @JohnQT if you have the money just go and buy one, you wont regret it. @GWH has a video of him smashing rabbits on youtube I think

I have one of the Ruger 17 Hornets. Really nice rifles. I had to order it, took about a year to get here.

Yeah, it was a bit of a pain, the semi laws changed as it landed and the whole Ruger shipment got sent back to the states to have the semi’s removed. That added a few months to the wait.

Been there done that, awesome little cal but does have it's draw backs

Pro's - cool looking round, very accurate & blows bunnies to smithereens

Con's - a pain in the arse fiddly thing to reload & you feel like you need to fuk around picking up all ya brass

If your'e a train spotter, only shhot a few fluffies now & then go fill ya boots, but if you like shooting - spot lighting - having fun then either get a 17hmr ( which I went back too ) or a 223 & use Belmont ammo, it's cheap az & works mint.

The 17H is freakin awesome. I absolutely love mine (CZ527American).

Out of all the rifles i have, seriously the 17 Hornet is truely epic fun. I do love going out looking for a deer with one of the larger CFs but a few hours of trigger time with the 17 Hornet in a target rich environment is pretty hard to beat.

I shot 50 odd rabbits in an apple orchard yesterday arvo with it, filmed most of the shots.

I reload for it, for about the same cost as buying 17hmr ammo. I dont find it that fidley to load at all. But hornady dies with the sliding sleeve on the seater die are essential. Anything else would make it tricky.

Ive got some vids on youtube, and just put a couple of very short ones from yesterday on too. Full vid coming soon.

I will never sell my 17 Hornet, i love it that much.

I also shoot 17 hmr and 223 but theres something really special about the 17H. 223 like performance with zero recoil and for less than half the powder and can use the 17H on properties youd never dream of using a 223.
