    17hmr

    Hey team
Looking for a 17hmr, ideally under/around $1000, happy to buy used.
Who has one and has recommendations?
What’s everyone’s opinions on silencers, are they necessary?
    Mainly for rabbits.

The 17hmr is pretty loud. A surpressor makes it much more pleasant. Given your location, you are likely to be making a lot shots on each outing...definitely get a surpressor. And 17hmr is the business for a dedicated rabbit rifle!

Beauty cheers, haven’t shot one yet so wasn’t sure what to expect noise wise. Have seen a few deals with scope and suppressor included so will look into them.

Hi Rem1187, I went through the same issue. I decided to try 17hmr and haven't looked back. Yes it is noisier, but a DPT can (I share it between my 22lr and 17hmr), and find when I'm shooting bunnies at range they don't seem to take much notice of the noise.

I got myself a Rossi 8117 from GC, they have them on special from time to for ~$349. It's a nice wee bolt action, threaded for a can. One of my boys headshot a bunny with it at 180m, I couldn't even see the damn thing (old eyes vs young eyes I guess). I have a Nikko Stirling 2-7x32 scope on it, but I'm thinking I'd like to put a 3-9 on it as givens it's legs it'd do better with slightly better magnification.

Great cartridge for small pests at ranges past where the 22lr runs out of steam.

I’ve got a Weihrauch, longest rabbit 189 metres, awesome, don’t have to pick up brass, needs a suppressor, extremely accurate.
This is the 3rd I’ve owned, started with a bull barrelled Brno, mistake #1, then an Anshultz, bolts with the pins are not quite there, great accuracy.
    Then the Weihrauch, searching stopped

I havent used it much but got a Sako Finnfire 17 HMR and have found it ecxellent. Ive got a 22LR the same as a matched pair. One for practice and suppressed for close poss and indoor practice. I swap the suppressor between them. Its good for hares out to 80m as I need no holdover. Have shot one at 140m but went a couple of cm sideways and found it sitting wounded to finish off. Mine both have cheap 3-12 scopes - you can use the extra magnification with the 17 but dont stint on the low range and parallax focus -you will shooting at 10m fairly often.

If your 22 is half decent, see if you can get a 17 in the same model and same scope.

With cci ammo sorted for concentricity over a gauge then 1/2 inch group at 100 yards

If unsorted - and runout can be as much as 8 thou from the projectiles centreline then 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards
