Hey guys. I'm looking at upgrading from the old 22lr for rabbit shooting. As where I shoot there's not much opportunity for close range shots, its mostly 100m plus. The rifle in using is a old norinco jw15 that's bout 15 years old. So instead of just getting a new 22lr I thought id try out something new. I've never shot a 17hmr or the 22mag, so I'm looking for some advice on which calibre to go with.

I had a blat on. 17HMR for the first time a couple of weeks back. Great calibre.
I bought a WMR as I could use it on goats, wallabies, and LR rabbits.
HMR is a great calibre though. If only going to be using for LR rabbits I'd go HMR.
What about suppressing them? I've heard the 17hmr can lose alot of power from it.
WMR over the HMR for my needs.

Have owned both and for small game 17HMR without question.
Is the 22mag likely to make a mess? I quite like a good rabbit stirfry so I don't wana waste to much meat if i miss the headshot.
HMR probably makes more of a mess.
Even if you're using a 22lr, head shoot them if you want the fluffies to eat.
there's a pretty nice 22mag savage in hunting and fishing for an alright price at the moment so i'm thinking i might go with that. guna have a go with a 17hmr on the weekend though so i'll wait till after that before i purchase any thing.
.17 would be my choice. It covers the 22 plus pretty much the 22 mag. Shortened and suppressed you ll find it hard to beat
Spend as much as you can afford on optics . Mine will shoot myna birds in the head at 100 every time.
Scopes worth more than the gun though
Just put some new glass on our Quad [VX3 3.5-10] It is so accurate.

I have a 22WMR and although its great if I were to do it again I would have gone with a 17HMR. As someone else said if you want to take on bigger things go 22WMR but if its just long range bunnies 17HMR.
I have both, and while the newer .22mag ammo narrows the gap somewhat if your buying it as a rabbit rifle I would say 17hmr all the way.
As has been said, if you also want to use the rifle for goats/wallabies then .22mag.
17hmr suppresses just fine and won't lose any speed-hell mine gains a very small amount.
17hmr is also less of a ricochet risk than any .22
I'm going to go with the 17hmr seems to be the majority vote.

Personally I would have a .17 hornet or .22 hornet over the .22 mag or .17 hrm.
If you mean the new .22 wsm rimfire, the only bolt action, is a savage B mag and lots of bad reports.
I would rather the .22 mag over the .17 hrm rim fire, but the .17 hornet leaves them both lacking for small game, and is likely cheaper to run if you reload.
I agree in a way have owned and sold my hornet and reloading gear, I can go buy cheap ammo for my HMR and its an awesome cal on small game, cost of ammo doesnt come into it, unless your shooting with Rushy and Happy cause theyre use to the wasteful ways of AR15!!! always needing one or two or three follow up shots.Quote:

I was making the same decision a couple of years ago, then went completely left field and bought a 223. The cost of reloading for the 223 was about the same as the 17HMR and the 22WMR ammo locally and it gave a bit more versatility. Glad I did.

Ive been doing a bit of research on cz lately . The stocks are matched to grain and colour then stained different ( dark, light ) according to what will look best . Luck of the draw . Just a bit of useless informationQuote:
