17hrm ammo preference for different guns

Had my lithgow 17gmr tested on 6 types of ammo couple years ago and it clearly likes 20 grain ammo better than the 17 grain. Confirmed again last week.
Shot my Anschutz 17hmr last week and it prefers 17 grain. The 20 grain had so much spread like a 22lr.

    Could anyone explain why?
    Barrel twist or something?

    Cheers.

Pass, my Marlin performs better with the hornady 17gr, not so much the 20gr.
Been wanting to try the CCI VNT
Grouchy Smurf had it right all along...

All of the 17 HMRs I’ve owned have preferred the Hornady 17gr vmax. Old ammo has always been suspect over new, but maybe the secondhand stuff has been poorly stored?

Mine liked 20gr too. As rounds went by, and probably barrel wear too, it changed to liking 17gr ballistic tip. Either cci or Hornady, which I believe are the same, maybe both made by Hornady.
If you didn't know most people seem to agree they like to shoot dirty.

To some extent, mine went from cover a 5shot geoup with your thumb at 50 to chest shots only on hares @dannyb gave it a good clean and back to shots touching.

Would have put 300-400 through it beforw accuracy dropped off though

I’ll try clean both of mine up and see if accuracy and preferences change.
