Anybody have experience with this round? Never considered it before, but talked to a guy who rates it, is also mentioned in the short barrel .223 thread, as an option for more velocity from a short barrel. Intended for short range (less than 100m), deer & goats, Bush pig style. First choice was .223, looking for feedback or experiences.

I am on my second 22-250. I toasted the first one goat culling. The 22-250 is a great round, however, if history was repeating itself for me I would just go with a 223 (I have one of those as well). I took some real long shots with my first 22-250 in probably a less than ethical manner which I wouldn't do nowadays or would use another rifle more suited - back then they were only goats eh so if you didn't quite hit them right so what - something I no longer subscribe too. Virtually all 22-250s have a slow twist so you are limited to lighter projectiles. My 223 has a factory fast twist and I can fire much heavier projectiles thru it. You burn a shit load of powder for not a great deal of increased velocity over a 223 and they burn out in the throats vastly sooner than a 223. Unsuppressed they have a harsh crack. Resale on them, in my opinion is not as good as a 223. The cheap 223 ammo that is available (maybe not right now) is not an option with the 22-250. Don't get me wrong, I love my 22-250, I just think a 223 provides some better options.
Yep for 100 meters go with the .223 shorten it to suit
For absolutely toasting stuff at 250 meters repeatably without dialling I d use an unshortened 22-250
Have two now and the .223 is all but redundant..
Just get one with a fast twist rate. Better range of projectiles to use
Better of with the 223 but better still cant beat the awesome 243...least that gives you slightly longer range and better options and more grunt with next to no recoil
This thing is a beast, Happy has fired it, seemed impressed it has the 1-14 twist but is devastating with Sierra 55g SBT, Fallow headshots at 200+... am considering a barrel change in the future to something faster to throw out Sierra 69g TMK...

The prev comment about an unsuppressed .22-250 having a nasty bark compared to the .223 is quite right in my experience. My mate's one is -loud- compared to a .223 and it's still got a lot of wind drift at 300, not close to any decent 6mm. You'd need a fast twist one shooting heavies to make it really stand out from a decent .223 with 53/55/60 boattails.

Does cost a bit more and if you are shooting it lots then you will obviously go through the barrel faster than .223.... I have a factory .223 now that puts holes in holes at 100m with Hornady 55 gr sp... that will work on most game when you pop it in the head!
Having said that.... 22-250 in the head works too!

Me too but it does show how brutal that 22-250 is. I guess quite humane even though it's utterly brutal.
I have had two 22-250, both used for varmints and dogs (coyotes):) in canada, have taken coyote's to 450m, with my old browning HB (sako action) safari.
There a great cal, but if you realy want to reach out a bit, get a 1-10 twist or faster, (browning and savage now make them) and run a 75gr a-max at 3400 fps, lots of fun, sold both mine thought, I kept my 6mm remington, bit more flexable,

Hitting an animal in the face (as it appears), rather than the brain or central nervous system, is not humane or cool in my book. But as I said, that's just me and its only an opinion. I might be wrong, but it does not look like it was hit in the head from behind with a front exit?Quote:

55 v-max is my pill of choice. The 62 or 63 grain sierra flat base was pretty good in my 22-250 Ackley.

Just showing the damage of the 22-250. Yes it's ugly but it shows the destruction the extra velocity causes over a .223
Not normally one for gory photos either and if you would prefer me to take it down I can.
