It was developed in 1936 as a wildcat but not commercialised till the late 60s early 70s so Thar was probably there at the beginning. (-:

Lets just say I have shot a few barrels out in the 22-250 and it's flat shooting .22 centerfire cousins.

They all are emphatic killers with correct shot placement and bullet construction.

The 22-243 is still a long time favourite and I have seen many more canoes in reds, fallow, roos and goats like the one above...

Have ordered a tikka 1:8 twist but won't get here till next year to shoot 80 amax's with is the plan.

About 1978-ish

@Marty Henry I took it into the Kaimanawas with Peter up the road from you towards the end of its life, and shot a couple. I think there's a pic in his book and a chapter about it. I remember I also shot a local deer with it around the same time for Tracey's birthday bash. It was a great big hind at about 150 yards and I recall it took 2 shots.

Has any one managed to ream a tikka 223 1:8 out to 22-250 / 22-250 AI or better yet as @300_BLK mentioned a 22-243?? Good idea bad idea??

I totally get the .22-250, had one years ago for a while, traditional old 1:14" twist. This would have been 80s. Blokes rave above them and why not? They do what they say on the box. Speed demons.

But they are an old, old design and even the most ardent fan would have to admit they're a pretty inefficient cartridge. For a 50gr pill, compared to a fast powdered .223 you're looking at roughly 10-15% more velocity for 35-38% more powder, and a whole lot bigger bang. Like real loud!

I do like them, but I also think maybe sometimes we can struggle to see clearly through our rose tinted sunglasses... you know, on the odd occasion. If I was looking at a fast .22 cal the only .22-250 I'd consider would be one of the fast twist ones, from Bergara or Savage (both 1:9"), or Ruger (1:10"). It makes more sense to me like that, we have much much better bullets these days, and the long, high BC .22s are right up there as genuine all rounders, but we can't use them in most .22-250s, which are slow twist.

But that said its fine to just stick with the tried and true, the old 1:14" twist and light, super fast bullets. The the old ways killed enough animals perfectly dead didn't they? I guess I just like the the wider range of options that today's faster twist barrels provide the shooter.

Special order, they make them for the U.S market. Hard to find a fast twist factory otherwise in NZ. Barrett make the fieldcraft, otherwise it's pretty much a custom build which was going to be the next option.

Yeah, you are right about the extra powder for not that much more result. But hey, running a shorter barrel and get what you what done for cents worth of extra powder it becomes more of an academic issue.
The one thing I can't help is being distracted where my new Lapua brass is going blazing at goats on side of the hill and a few got away last time! Never a problem with .223. Have some PPU cheap to try out.
