    22 Barrel and Suppressor Project

    Gidday Guys

I feel the need for a 22RF build. I have an action. I have an idea. Oh lordy help me !!

So an ideal barrel length for a 22 can be pretty short, say about 10-12 inches. If its going to be real short it could be a quite heavy or a bull barrel. If the suppressor was integral or machined into the end of the barrel then the short effective length wouldn't be a problem with the law would it ??

I have in mind the design of a Manatis suppressor, the design is very simple to machine, basically what I'm proposing is to counterbore the muzzle end of a heavy barrel, machine in the suppressor shape and then make up a cover to bring it back to its original diameter and a finished appearance on an overall length of about 16 inches.

The balance should work out quite nice, it would feel stable in the hand, but would be lighter than a full target barrel . . . the ideal might be to get a suitable aluminium sleeved barrel I suppose but I'm not going to hack up the Kidd one I have as an experiment !!

Anyone know if this has been tried ??

I know someone who had a extra heavy blank turned into a barrel/suppressor unit-alloy sleeve screws on by the chamber and then a cap on the end that attaches to the barrel to try and tension the whole thing. Each baffle has a o ring around it to seal the gap-these often come off when trying to assemble.

    It cost him a fortune!

It's louder to my ear than a pistol with the same length barrel and a gun works .22mag can.
But,it's short and legal. And very cool.

As your going to be limited by blank diameter as to your baffle size(unless you get extra funky) I would try and maximise the internal volume to boost performance.

I love short guns so have been tempted to get something similar made but the cost puts me off.

Talked to a gunsmith about it once and he thought that if a run for made up for the 10/22 and the cost could be got down that they would sell well-but at that time he was a one man band with no time for new speculative projects and I couldn't justify the $ for a one off.

Sig have done something along these lines for 9mm.

This is a little different to what you describe, but its what I've done to my 10/22.
Photos are my first attempt - second attempt is shorter but same design.
Looks good, doesn't catch on anything, keeps that full heavy barrel look

For the crown you'd probably just finish it by hand with a ball and cutting compound -the counterbore would be about 100 mm

Gerbs - yep we're on the same page - is that a aluminium sleeved barrel (like a Kidd etc) that you've used ?? How short was the barrel on the second attempt ??

    Thanks

Aluminum tube from Ulrich aluminum in Palmy (where I live), Maniatis suppressor, and I think the barrel ended up at 11in.
It JUST cleared the stock, and overall (without suppressor) length was 765mm.
