Sure a 22 mag or 17HMR ammo works out the same price as reloading but at least I am not sitting at the bench reloading, just not my thing, repetition just kills me .
faced a similar dilemma a few years ago . . shooting rabbits/hares at close/medium range is way overkill plus not wanting to spend to much time reloading . . a perfect excuse to buy new rifles.

i went with sako quads and 4 barrels

where your needs differ to mine is the possibility of running into Deer/Pigs . . . that to me rules out all the rimfires .. . my 2c is get a progressive press and pump out shitloads of ammo in a short time using bulk bullets, keep the premuim bullets for LR work

whatever you choose there is some new toys in your future . . win win

My .22 start with .22LR but I've always have a sweet spot for the .22WinMag, have both bolt and semi auto, love them and they do a great job for me. Now if I want to reach out, I take the .22-250, run 55g slugs generally but also have some 40g that will tip over 4000fps, loads of fun and damn accurate... now that said I think @Happy nailed it, go a .204 Ruger, it's flat fast and makes things go 'Puff'.

Yes the 17wsm. I've just got a heavy barrel version to replace the standard one they are great fun and ideal for what the ta is looking for. 20gn at 3000fps and 25gn at 2700 I think. Had a 22hornet for 25 years but prefer the 17 now. Not had an hmr but did have a mach2 briefly, no good in the wind. Ammo for the 17wsm around $35 for 50

Yeah Plinky that does sound pretty cool, almost 223 performance and ammo price same as 22 mag and 17HMR. What brand of rifle did you go for ?

Savage are the most common option, their BMag range which they do in blued and stainless, standard and heavy barrel. They are pretty basic and the plastic stock is the biggest piece of shit. I've got std barrel blued which will be getting sold on now and just got the stainless heavy barrel model which also has a boyds stock option. I got a very sharp price from shooters world in gore and am in the process of getting a better stock from boyds direct as the factory upgrade was close to $500. Has a rotary mag similar to a 10-22. Nice little outfit with a dpt can on the end. Last outing saw to around 20 hares up to 200m. Ruger offer it as an option in the m77 but couldn't justify the coin for that. Ammo is easy to get. I think they changed the twist rate in the latest savage models to improve accuracy with the 25gn.
The most powerful rimfire in the world, Dirty Harry would definitely have one

I'd be happy to shoot the fallow with the 17wsm but not a pig

From what I have read the bolt itself from a 22mag or 17 HMR isn't strong enough. Stunning performance, very noisy so needs a can but yeah some ammo is only $5 more than 17HMR or 22 mag and t's nearly on par with a 222.
Pretty amazing. From what i can see the lack of rifles ( makes ) is the biggest problem.
At $40 - $45 for 50 rounds why sit in front of a press for hours farting around.
