    22 magnum

for when it happens one day:
What is the best bang for buck 22 magnum around NZ at moment?
Rough is fine as long as I can fettle it out myself.
    Accuracy is the major factor.
    second hand counts here too.

223 Remington is about the best bang for buck 22WMR. With reloads they're about the same price per round with better range and smack. They do however, typically, cost more to buy and quieten.

Having said that, I did pick up a nice Marlin 22WMR earlier in the year that is a tack driver and it is a tack driver. Particularly with @TimeRider driving it.
Beetroot and Micky Duck like this.
There are only three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't!

@gadgetman That's another calibre id like one day too-the list is endless
yeah reloading and me... not a fan.
There is another rimfire hotshot I'm interested in but apart from lack of fundage I'm waiting to see about that one. Its another classic "there is a better centerfire that can be reloaded as cheaply as you can buy it". Not interested in looking for used brass and don't do enough shooting to make it worth it to set up.

I've got a Marlin heavy barrel 22 magnum. Shortened barrel and suppressed. It's a tac driver with Hornady vmax ammo but yep at 50c a squeeze it's expensive to feed.

I would personally go for a. 223 and hand load for it for the same price if I was buying again

Savage, Marlin, Zastava, Ruger American all good value accurate rimfires. Savage have the best trigger of the ones I've used.

I have both .22mag and .223. Each have their place; when on a farm where boundaries are important the .22mag gives me reasonable ‘flat’ shooting for a lot further IMHO than .22

The centrefire .223 has the legs for me to enjoy wallabies etc out to a reasonable range.

For the they have quite specific, and different purposes. Get that .22mag (I’ve got a Stirling b/a that has had 1000s of rounds through it) they’re a good workhorse I believe.

If 22mag is what you have your heart set on, then once you find a sweet rifle/ammo combo, a bulk ammo buy (with other 22mag users?) might be an option to drop the price per shot a bit.

Best bang for your buck is a CZ 452/455, there are far cheaper rifles but with a CZ you wont find yourself looking for an upgrade where a cheaper rifle you may.
The Savage and Marlin offerings are not bad (especially the heavy barrel ones) but some people have feeding issues.

Unless you are particularly set on 22wmr I'd go for 17hmr instead, it's the same price to feed but typically gives you better accuracy and shoots flatter and bucks the wind better.
What ever round you go for and go for a CZ.
    Garret and ZG47 like this.
