.22 Magnum Accuracy

Had an old single shot savage .22lr that I had rechamber to .22wmr was very accurate.
When shooting lamp shy possums out of stone pines. They would always turn there heads away from the light. So could soak up .22lr not so the big brother. Thumped them.
Brought a CZ back to NZ before these bullock new rules that I had tricked up here. New trigger etc. That was also on the money. Brother brought that.
Seen to many .17 that blow the bolt. So not so keen on that round…split cases and all.
There was a lever action that Brain Bourdon (might have miss spelled his last name) wrote about in his book “Of Mountains Men and Deer” that I would have loved to have gotten my hands on.

Found these target scraps from last occasion we shot in my Marlin model 982SV 22 magnum. Mate shot it in at 50m - did the 4 shots in bottom group. 0.3" or so.. Then I told him I wanted it shot in 1" high at 50 - and he said "do it yourself.." So up a few clicks and the top scrap is the next 3 shots in one hole. Now that's two shooters getting superb results from a working 22 magnum.

This 22 Magnum rifle with Tasco World Class 4-16x cost me $520 tops, but will outshoot most expensive units and match the accuracy of any 17HMR. Had those too.. Magnums can be very accurate - you just need to pick a good model and ammos -and get the cleaning process and dead right esp with copper coated ammo. Plenty of accurate ones coming up in posts above. I found the fiocchi 40 grain to be the most accurate heavier weight bullet and it ended up my do all round.

I had a Stirling 1500 with heavy stainless barrel and suppressor, shot very well with remington (think it was 35gr ballistic tip) sub inch at 100. Sold it fir similar reasons others dud, 223 performed better for same/less

No, that hasn't worked either.

At one stage, I saw an option something like "advanced" and when I clicked on that, I suddenly saw my phot on the screen but my typed reply text had vanished. Now I can't find that "advanced" option showing anywhere.

Any idea what I am doing wrong or not doing? Any further help will be appreciated as I am eager to post up both business stock and also personally owned items for sale without the need to add the Trade Me commission fees.

WELL WHAT DO YOU KNOW! The target photo has somehow appeared. It shows two separate groups. The one on the right is CCI Maxi Mag and the more central group is Winchester .22 Magnum made in Australia. I will now try to add a phot of the box for that ammunition.Attachment 213559

I been reading @mudgripz various threads and posts about rimfires, and it has payed off today. I saw a very tidy Marlin 25MN in my local retailer, and they let me test is out before I handed over the cash. Glad I did, as it was a tackdriver straight ‘out of the box’. Average of .45” at 50m for 3 consecutive groups, and then two consecutive sub inch groups at 100m. No bedding, and just a VX1 3-9 off one of my centrefires. Still has the as new 7lb trigger pull. Guess an accurate .22 WMR is possible!

Good score. I have the same and mine put 5 shots into the bottom third of one of those dots. Money generally equates to quality, but doesn't always equate to accuracy with rimfires. @mudgripz showed the newbee up with his group above, a touch of one-upmanship. ;)

I think there is quite a bit of talk about how accurate those marlin 25s are

To be honest, a long while back I had the use of a friend's Ruger bolt action 22 magnum. Loved that gun and fantastic on plovers. I always thought a 22wmr would be nice.
Then the 17hmr popped out and in the hands of one friend in particular i thought they were the shizzle and would like one instead. I never got either although I thought I had my mitts on a Krico wmr at one stage but no.
Now while I do have a hankering for a 17wsm I struggle with the rifles available and the reported consistency of the ammo. Not much to pick from for either considering makes the ammo for at least one other brand.
My thoughts on the 22wmr have resurfaced and think it is just a little more useful than the HMR. With 30 grainers it is a little bit behind the 17 but packs more punch and can still use the 40s (and up).
I hardly use most of my firearms so with a lack of coin it is very hard to justify one.
I would prefer a semiauto but honestly it would be hard to turn down one of those marlins

Alot of the Marlin 22LR/17HMR/22WMR rimfires are accurate for sporters - you will however get the occasional dud like any make. 17HMR has same case of course as 22 Magnum. 17 has alot smaller pill (17-20gr), faster, flatter trajectory, longer range. 22WMR heavier pill (30-50gr), hits harder out to 125m or so, more penetration. Magnum better if you chance on a close up goat/wallaby, but both rounds quite wind affected which can seriously reduce distance. Gave a 22 magnum a thorough field testing last 2 years but in our frequent 30-50k breezes the 223 is much better option.

I'd be careful with 22Magnum semiautos. Read some Savageowner forum material - and rimfirecentral. They do present problems esp the Savage A22. Like the Brazilian Rossi you may get a good one, but there real quality variations.

Was tempted by a Excell 22WMR today.....i did resist.

Could have bought it but thinking i already have those bases covered....

I looked at a Savage A22, but didn't like the idea of having to take the scope off to clean it. Apparently, there's a screw in the top receiver that you can't tighten properly unless you do. Ended up getting a CZ512 in 22WMR. Good rifle but I think accuracy does suffer a bit due to its semiauto-ness. Or, maybe it's just me.
