    .22 vs .17

    Morning,

I am a newbie to the whole hunting malarky. I've got my deer/goat gun - a t3 7mm08 (that is yet to be used) and am looking at my rabbit and small game gun.
Living in Dunedin has it's benefits - 30min drive up the peninsula and I'm in rabbittown

Anyway - I'm a left-handed shooter, so my choices are smaller than most. I would prefer a bolt-action so that I can get used to the movements needed so using the big gun is a lot smoother.

My cousin who is my mentor tells me that if I get one small-game gun, make it a .17. What are the benefits of it other than range? The cost difference of the bullets is pretty insane...

    .22 vs. .17. Thoughts?

Absolutely, I looked at the cost of running a 17HMR and it worked out almost the same as a 223Rem.

.22 you will get more practice with a 22 and therefore become a better shot, practice practice practice that makes the difference between a good shot and an average or bad shot.
Velocity is thrilling, but diameter does the real killing.

.22 better range and cheaper LH options plus better chance of resale if needs be.
Rememer you're looking at this for practice for the big stuff. keep it cheap and simple as the others have said.
NOBODY IS PERFECT - but if you're from Yorkshire you're pretty close
The above was written slowly, for those of us who can't read quickly.

Well, that seems pretty comprehensive then!
    Now to find a decent left-handed .22.

Any places that I can start looking then? I've looked at the H&F catalogue and guncity.co.nz

.17's are pretty impressive, i love shooting mine and dont shoot the 22 at all anymore, but the bullets are pricey. Performance wise they blow the 22 out of the park but if your only shooting bunnies at 50m a 22 would be much more friendly on the wallet as the .17 is a bit overkill for close range.

Would definitely be getting a 22 for your first small rifle

A .22, its so cheap to shoot. A mate has a norinco and a .17 marlin and its a great bullet....but the ammo is just a crazy crazy price....

The norinco with scope and silencer is obscenely cheap at $259...but rh

    Norinco JW15A Synthetic 22lr

    So,

You are lucky, a LH CZ 452 - 2E ZKM

CZ 452-2E ZKM AMERICAN Left Hand 22LR

    CZ 452 - 2e Zkm Lux (brno Model 2) .22lr - Shooting.com.au

    CZ 452-2E ZKM

    Target Sports

NB check it is the 12 grovve barrel...

This, if I see a RH is what I will buy, or its new equiv the 455 super match but they are not imported into NZ (ive asked).

    Thanks for the info steven.
They look like excellent rifles. I've looked at the right-hand version before, but that was before I found just how strong my left-handedness is!

Looks like I have some saving-up to do.

Another good option is the Marlin range for a 22. Change a spring and you have a really good shooter for not too many $$$.
