can't argue with that logic I guess , but I am not dragging the 338 out for goats and find even the 308 destroys to much meat for my liking . Loved the ar for goats , 'nuff said about that , but think 223 would be dangerous shooting up into trees at possums and figure a wmr would be a good option if effective on goats . And I would like a semi again , bad , bad man that I am.

This is the one I am lusting after specifically @hotbarrels.
Scary expensive.
But there's one at my local and I made the mistake of handling it.....

How well does the 22 mag deal with goats at closer ranges up to 50mtrs or so.

HELL YEAR / GOOD hope people are not using the new brass stuff VMax etc in old guns, as barrel rifling was only designed for lead, you will end up with a smooth bore.

Yea, I hear you.
Having shot huge numbers of rabbits in the past 5-6 years with AR's (my best three day hunt was 1058 bunnies), I too am missing the semi.
Having transitioned to the 22WMR in a CZ bolt as my primary rabbit gun for day time shooting (.17HMR with IR for night shooting, .223 or .22-250 for longer range or windy days) I have coveted the superlight in WMR. I just cannot justify the cost.

I've shot quite a few goats with the 22Wmr. Best bullet was the fiocchi 40 grain followed by the winchester 40 and 100 yds would be the absolute max. Small goats fall over easily but a big Billy or nany can be a very different story. I've gone back to the 223, ammunitions about the same price and you have the luxury of a "bit more range" and oomph for when you don't get it right.

Call me old fashioned, but I love shooting Goats with Rimfire rifles It just brings back memories of younger days .
The .22Mag is fine for goats if you are careful and know your rifle/ammo combo well .
The .223 is probably the best Goat medicine if you are purely just wanting to get Goats killed , and gives you the option of much greater distance.
Lets be honest they aren’t the hardest thing to hunt so I like to sneak up and head shoot them which puts an element of fare chase back into the occasion.
My Anschutz 22Mag is my most carried/used firearm and is never far away when I’m working around the property .
Pick your ammo/ projectile carefully and you won’t go wrong.

Piece of cake. Like anything, shot placement.

the .223 is perfect goat medicine...PERFECT..... and sooner or later you would be carrying magnum and deer would pop out at 150 yards...or reasonable sized pig.....and you be undergunned....Ive killed a lot of animals with .22 magnum ,the 223 just does job much much much better.........
if you dont own a 22lr.....yeah the magnum is good option....
and comment about 223 for possums up trees....the magnum ISNT MUCH safer.....you still need to be aware of background .... arguably a varmit round from 223 could travel less if it connects with something..although there are some very good magnum rounds now that blow up nicely...the makers needed to up game after 17s were taking over.

but the 223 would be my pick all day anyday.

I agree mickey that 223 is superior as that is why I owned the evil black gun but even that I would not pull the trigger pointed skyward.
And I was thinking to try the 22 mag subs for possum in the hope that they will be safer in that respect.
That said whether they will cycle in a semi may well be an issue also. And as much of the type of ranges it will be used for will be close enough to be considered point blank
the extra legs of the 223 are unnecessary.
And I usually have a family member with me carrying a center fire should we stumble across something larger but in these spots that has only ever happened once in several years.

you can download a 223 to 22mag...but cant up 22 mag to match 223,you can even ream out primer pocket to fit a shotgun primer and fit an air rifle pellet ......pretty sure you can still get an adapter to fire 22mag or 22lr THROUGH a 223...pure single shot option,but its there.

I have a 22 mag and got a box of the subs to try I got a fail to eject every now and then about 5-7for the box from memory. It fired but didn't have enough to push the action back and eject. Gun is a cz 512 cut down to 16 inches and a hardy over barrel suppressor

Thats exactly what I used to do with the black gun. Swap out bolt and mag and 10 seconds later had a rimfire with just the extra bolt and mag to carry.
It was the perfect rifle for the job and being a semi negated the fact I am left handed.
So I am thinking a semi mag would be the closest thing with a simple ammo change.
Well that's my theory anyway....

Thanks @country cuts , that's good to know. I could live with that I think. Even high velocity loads in my 22 fail to eject on occasion .
