22 wmr vs goats

You would definitely want a scope with a ballistic or mil dot reticle if you were running two different loads in the 357. The difference in trajectory is huge! Or it is in my rifle anyway. I use a leupold vx hog on mine, the reticle works pretty good for the two loads I run in mine. You could also run a standard scope in quick detach rings, open sights for goats with the hot load and then put the scope on when your in small game mode. You can get a get a scout mount for the rossi, but your scope choice is then limited to scout scopes or a red dot. However it sounds like you just a .22mag. Just get it if that's what you want, life is too short.

Set it up the same way we used to do it in the 'good old days', back when we had the freedom to shoot centrefire semi's - run double optics.
Glass on top for the long shots, and a little red dot on the 45deg for the close stuff.

the 357 runs a graduated vortex. center dot is 357 at 50 and second hash mark is 38 at 25mtrs . seems to work ok . It is the scope that came off my bad gun and used to do the same with that . Center 223 at 100mtrs and second hash 22 at 25mtrs or there abouts...

yep , on private land Phil . We have a couple of private forest blocks we hunt but surrounded by farmland and we go in every month or so and chase goats and clean out possums and rabbits but do it all on foot , with the odd pig seen also . Have yet to see any deer in there although there is the odd sign which is why not to concerned on carrying a deer rifle myself and between the rest of the family got that covered anyway . Any doc shooting we obviously are limited to centerfire for the goats and usually let the kids nail those on the way out . Generally hunt doc targeting deer which is where the 308 comes in . And of course you can't spotlight possum on doc land anyway .

yep , I am . Too many choices and possible avenues versus cost of each choice on top of whether or not to keep the dino gun to help fund any of those choices (which deep down I don't really want to do) is doing my head in a little. Especially when factor in the rifle I would really like in 22 mag is horrendously expensive .... so I want to be sure within myself that I make the right choice and get my money's worth and not decide in 6 months that I made the wrong choice and loose wads of cash on-selling whatever I ended up buying .... And loose the 45 in the process .
And having no experience with 22 mag doesn't help .

And spending the next six months sleeping on the sofa when the missus sees me walk in the door with a new rifle hasn't even factored into it ...... yet ....

I agree that we owe it to the animals that we hunt to not be under-gunned. We all want quick clean kills and using marginal calibers can reduce the chance of that outcome. But bringing dangerous game into the conversation and comparing animals of equal live weight is bullshit in my opinion. The fact is that a relatively thin-skinned light-boned herbivore of say 230kg, is likely to have a considerably different caliber requirement to a 230kg predator with big fangs and claws and a very high power to weight ratio. Predators fuck things up for a living (I’m talking prey), and if a hunter wounds one it will most certainly take any opportunity to dish out some revenge, hence why hard hitting calibers are required for dangerous game regardless of the weight of the animal. Not having a crack at you Finnwolf but I think the Aussie author is off the mark. If he’s right, well I guess I better sell my 308 and get a 375H&H: a good red stag is about the same weight as an African lion..

So 45/70 for possum isn't such a bad idea then....? ;)

I got myself a rossi 7122m. Cheap and cheerful but does the job as well as the 512 I had. To be fair it is a bit pickier on ammo. But if you want some experience with the caliber before investing post of cash it could be an option.

i have one too, bloody accurate. no ammo issues but likes the g30gr hornady

That was good grouping for sure @gonetropo. I wouldn't of expected that from a Rossi , no offense to the brand , so hadn't considered one of those.

And unfortunately I do have expensive tastes in firearms but I tend to buy them for the long term too so happy to pay more for something that gives me a bit of pride of ownership , something a bit special , if you know what I mean.

Nzguns.co.Nz did a side by side review on 3 semi auto 22 magnums that we provided. It included penetration tests etc on game. Worth a read.

I hunt private land with my .17 HMR...and goats fall over pronto.
I was once asked by 2 DOC rangers to take out a large nanny, even though I explained my calibre....at 35 mtres, the headshot pole axed it, never kicked even once. They were slack jawed, while I remained expressionless (just).

I use my .22 mag on the farm to shoot everything from bunnies to bulls,as previously stated shot placment is key!

The ozzie gun guy in the youtube video which Link I posted earlier found the winchester 34 gr HE (which I have a box to try) and the 50gr federal especially were the most accurate , but I can't find any of the federal , all out of stock. Will try some of the winchester subs as well and see if they cycle.
Will be a week or two before I can get out and try though.

And I will say it's not actually super light when compared to other offerings with normal diameter barrel s rather than heavy barrels , around 2,5 kg , but the balance is absolutely perfect . I handled several other brand offerings except the cz which was my other choice but couldn't find one locally to fondle .
But after handling this one nothing else was even close . An absolute pleasure to shoulder and point in my opinion.
The weight is in all the right places , even with scope and suppressor fitted.

Yea, a poorly balanced rifle is more tiresome to carry in the field than a rifle carrying 1/2 - 3/4lb of extra weight.

Ammo wise, as per my original posting, I found the Winchester 40gr Super-X has excellent penetration and kills (pops) rabbits like a .223. If it shoots well through your new gun I think it would do well on goats.
CCI 30ge TNT are super explosive with no penetration through a rabbit. I was surprised when these panned out to be the most accurate ammo currently available through my CZ. Good for rabbits, but not a good option for goats.

If you can get them try cci 40gn gamepoints they are brilliant on all things small and not so small within sensible ranges (which with a 22wmr you will be limited to anyway)

Any experience with those ?
Figured the winny 34 HE for rabbits if they are as accurate as in the review vid and try the subs , if accurate and cycle ok , for possum to keep the noise down and they're always close range anyway , maybe 25 mtrs or so usually if that .

For possums I would use .22LR. Why pay twice the price for the WMR performance and then choke it to .22LR subsonic performance?

I see what you are saying but the whole point of this exercise was to avoid me carrying 2 rifles and just have the one to do all three jobs . Just load up and carry a couple of magazines with different rounds for different targets .
No doubt I will still have to carry the 22lr papoose for the kids until they want to shoot it for possums anyway.

One of the farms i shoot on the owner swears by 22mag for his goat control (never owned an ar like you think he would of) he has a ruger m77 in 22 mag which hes had for years drops goats like a sack of shit
He can body shoot aswell

As a bunch have already said, with good bullet placement no problem. I learnt to hunt as a kid with a .22 and got very good at neck and head shots inside 50m, dropped a ton of goats no worries and took a few decent pigs with well placed head shots.

I just posted on another thread about my experience with 22lr and 22 mag. I have lots of goats on the property so regularly undertake culls for them as well as rabbits. Whilst my 22 mag is more powerful I find that I simply cannot get it to group well over 50 meters. I have a Brno bolt action as well as a beautiful Winchester lever action. Despite having tried virtually all brands and configurations of ammo I cannot get reliable groups. On the other hand my older 10/22 shooting CCI sub sonics with a suppressor is deadly accurate out to 100 - 110 meters. 2 weeks ago I head shot a hare at 112 meters according to my brother who was spotting for me with the Leica rangefinder. When culling the goats I always use the 10/22 and am comfortable to shoot them out to 80 meters and they always drop straight down. I shot 2 this morning - 1 at 75m and the other at 62m. I love the 10/22 because I can nail 5 or 6 in a mob and they have no idea where the shots are coming from, and being suppressed you can imagine it is very quiet. The point I am making is that it is all very well having greater knock down and retained velocity. As SiB said, shot placement with small rimfire is absolutely critical.

Mark and Sam on YT did a video on 22 magnum accuracy. He actually ended up tearing down factory ammunition and reloading it. Redoing the powder charges and putting a consistent crimp on the cartridge resulted in a velocity increase and much better extreme spread in velocity. The problem with 22 magnum seems to be that the consistency of the ammunition just isn't very good.

I'll be real interested to see how 17wsm goes on goats.

the new 22 mag ammo is a heap better than the older stuff...that said my mate also has winchester lever .22 magnum the bog std winchester ammunition has always gone well in it...when you could get it the stirling stuff in black n yellow box was even better....I suggest if you cant get the magnum to group.look at everything else other than the ammunition....scope,rings,stock...how you holding the stock (try shifting off side hand back to the metalwork ) they do shoot well enough...

I hear what you are saying re 22 mag accuracy but did my research on the rifle I bought and they are reputed to be very accurate .
There is a vid on youtube of the ozzie reviews and he tested the same rifle with five different ammo brands/types and found them all accurate enough , but two of them in particular were shooting sub moa at 100 mtrs.
Unfortunately the federal he tested in 50 gr which was the most accurate I can't find any for sale locally at the moment apparently due to the ammo shortages but do have a box of the winchester 34gr which came second in his test to try . Also grabbed a box of the heavier 45 gr winchester in lieu of the fed 50 to see how that goes.
And just for shits and giggles grabbed a box of 45 gr subs to try as well.....
Just can't get out for another week or so to have a few shots but will report how it goes here when I get the chance to try them out.
I'm hoping the 45 gr (non subs) will be accurate for head shots on goats......

Have you tried the hornady 30gr v-max? This appears to be the most consistent 22mag ammo available and shoots MOA in my marlin. I haven’t found them hugely explosive on small game (unusual for a v max!) so they might hold together just enough to be effective on smaller goats with chest shots, but 40-50gr would be better

Yeah saw that episode with the ruger rpr.
And if I remember power charge had not much effect on velocity and as you mentioned the crimp was more effective for overall performance .
Not that I will be going to that extreme to bowl over a few pesties .
If I remember he also found adding a barrel sleeve improved the grouping which I thought was interesting , particularly as my new toy is sleeve barreled .

My Marlin 982SV heavy barrel in 22 mag is extremely accurate - better than me. Both gadgetman and I have shot 0.3" groups at 50m, and it easily popped 0.7" at 100mtrs. All with the Hornady 30gr V-Max.

Just watch the Hornady if using it. As have others, I found its also a dirty little round and I needed to really keep barrel copper cleaned to continue to get best of it.

In the review video for my toy the rifle didn't cycle the Hornady rounds. He concluded the semi just preferred heavier rounds to cycle correctly , which gives me doubts the subs will cycle reliably , or at all.

I found my CZ didn't like the Hornady. Best I could get was around 3" @100
