Hey guys, I have a Brno Zkk 601 deluxe in .223, and toying with the idea of getting it reamed out to a larger .22 cal cartridge. Is this costly, and would it have much of an impact on the rifle’s value?
Thinking 22-250, but also considering others e.g .223AI, .220swift, providing they’ll fit the internal mag.
Chamber reaming is not too expensive, but the bolt head would need opening out for a larger rim, the magazine follower and possibly the whole mag would need to be lengthened.
If all that works, Then there is the issue of the higher pressure in a barrel that is thinner at the breech due to rechambering, the reduced area of the locking lugs in relation to the case head and the higher pressures generated by all of those cartridges you mention
So all in all not a smart idea IMO.
Oops Forgot to mention that it would stuff its value.

if your going to do it, do it for the better performance gains with your eyes wide open
i would suggest you buy a BRNO .243 if you want a dual purpose varmint/Deer rifle
Yep leave the 223 alone and just buy a 2nd rifle
Interesting scenario, I've had a .22-250 for years, issue with it was I wanted to put bigger pills than 5gr down but the 1:14 would allow that... so some thinking was done, result...
I have a new 1:8 twist 24" barrel being put together and reamed to .22-243... quite comfy for pushing the 74g pills have...
Confirm your twist rate and decide what size pills you want to use, if they won't work either rebarrel or just buy what you want to fit the purpose...
Thanks for the replies, will probably keep it .223, that definitely seems to be the general consensus. So far as I know it’s 1:12 twist.

What is your reasoning for wanting to go to the larger case? What do you want to do with it? Do you currently reload? I handload 55gr HPBT sierra gamekings and run them at just over 3200 fps from a short 18" barrel. It is very accurate at that and as long as its not too windy would be happy as to shoot rabbit sized critters out to 400 odd yards. A 22 or 24 inch barrel would have them going a bit quicker still.Quote:

If you want abit more grunt and less mucking around have you thought about reaming to 22-204?

less mucking around???? .22-204 is in a roundabout way almost a .222 magnum lmfao...and having had a wee tootoo with one the gains over std .223 were hardly worth the hassle.
different loads in .223 will cover just about all the bases sure a .22-250 would be nice (always intreged me and sure do flatten wallabies) but the .223 does the job just nicely,and if by some chance you got 4hrs from home and realised you had left ammo at home on bench I know which cartridge I would rather be chambered in.
Well certinanly less mucking around than reaming it to 22-250, his twist won't suit pushing heavy pills so what's the point in 22-250, he obviously wants to change it to something so why not 22-204

seen it done to a savage and it ugly from start to finish.... the results werent anything to write home about either...the extra powder used gained sweet stuff all more speed over std .223
the joke in my mind is how this round (.22-204) is a absolute classic eggzample of how if we humans buggerize around with something for long enough,keep adding improovements along the way ,we eventually end up right back where we started (give or take a flyshit) and think we have the next best thing since sliced bread and spice racks.
the .222 magnum didnt offer much over .223 so sort of died out and was discontinued
the .204 ruger is basically a .222 magnum necked down to .20 cal
the .22-204 is the .204 ruger necked back up to .22 cal
and now people say its much better than .223
another is .32/20 thats a very old black powder jobbie
if I load subsonic with lightish projectiles in my 7.62x39mm (or dare I say it a 300blk) we think we all cleaver and have something all new and flashasmichaeljackson but we just reinventing the wheel

I have/had 2 model 12 Savages in 223. I also just sold a Bow, so I decided I was going to rebarrel the 2nd into 6.5 CM, but thought I would really get some more barrel wear from the longer one first. I got a new bolt head from Brownells and Lee Jefferson from Dunedin did the re-chamber to 22-250. Its a great rifle so far with the Nikko stirling LR scope I put on it. Now I have brass I will get some heavier bullets to load up
I converted a lot of the ex-Police 601 Brnos to .22/250 many years ago (1980's). It was quite straightforward; rechamber, alter the bolt face and the extractor and good to go. No magazine alterations were needed. The end result was a good accurate rifle in a much more useful caliber.
