.223 barrel length 1-12 twist rate

Can anyone help with what would be minimum barrel length you'd recomend for 50 gr projectiles up to max 63
    Twist is 1 / 12

    Cheers Happy.

Don't know happy sorry, but I purchased a rifle recently with a 1in 8 twist rate, and intend to go 63 grain pills. It has a 20 inch barrel, but I don't do long range stuff, more 50 60m that kind of distance mostly.

you'll find a 1n12 should stabilise a 63 as far as know barrel length wont affect weather a bullet will stabilise as far as I know that's down to purely twist rate but I could be wrong guys have 12 inch barrel ar's and they go sweet but in my opinion after looking at charts I wouldn't go any shorter than 16inches the driffance in speed between a standard 22 inch sporting barrel and 16 inches is next to nothing on the greater skeem of things but driffance between 16 and 12 is huge

You will find the 12.5" barrel AR15s are running a 1 in 7" twist.

Depends on how long you want the overall length of the rifle to be & how much velocity you are willing to sacrifice ?

Unless stability is right on the edge, barrel length or velocity makes little difference to a particular twist rate or barrels suitability to stabilise certain projectiles .

Shot two ARs back to back in the weekend with the same 52 grain ammo, one 16", 1-9" the other 20", 1-7"

I was surprised by the approx 200 fps difference between the rifles

I don't know enough about ARs to know if gas ports/systems make a difference to velocity ?

Found an article that I read a few years ago whilst choosing the length of barrel for a rifle I was building in .223AI
    Hope this helps.

Not really. Powder makes the biggest difference. @Kiwi Greg

Having a measure up this Arvo. Will post current length and then what I d like to shorten it to so you have an idea of what I want to do.

Basically its make this shorter. Its an unTikkafied Tikka ... Id like to get it a little shorter.. Tape measure this Arvo ...

Current length measuring from receiver end of hex to thread end at tip = 435 mm or 17.3 inches

I would like to move suppressor back to within say 1 inch of stock end. Barrel would then be 14.75 inches. ( 375 mm)

Its very accurate at present and I ll leave it alone if that's at risk ... Using Hornady training ammo its brilliant and therefore cheap to shoot.

Id guess 1/2" to 3/4 " or better at 110 yards in the weekend .

Now ive seen the rifle and read the messurenents my suggestion is dont touch it a 14 inch barrel would drop speed quite a bit and my geuss is a little less accuracy as well on the other hand "take off" tikka barrels arnt hard to get so if it fucked it you could chuck a 2nd hand barrel on easy enough
