Flyblown.....Ive shot somewhere around 50 deer .....dont know as stopped counting years ago....how many were over a hundred yards??? less than 20. over 300???less than 10
less than 50 yards.....probably 20 LOL
it all depend on where and how you hunt,having self taught mainly and learning during the hard years of late 80s-early 90s it was bush stalking or nothing....it only the last few years that have had me venture out into open country.

Giant noisy cartridges don't count. Yes you can shoot anything with them. I can shoot rabbits with my 7mm RM for $2.50/round. Shot hundreds of rabbits with 6.5x47L reloads at $2.40/rnd. .223 has cheap boxes of 50 for $1/rnd last time I looked. Much more affordable for bunny shooting and I have seen neck shot deer dropped with a 40gr V-max.
.243 etc is too big and too expensive to be an all rounder, by comparison. You can shoot rabbits with any large chambering.
I miss my AR terribly now, but my new Sauer 100 is a very nice rifle. Very nice to have a .223 back in the safe.
using that logic the .22lr would win hands down...... and yes Ive shot both magpies and rabbits with the poohseventy.
So using that reckoning, the humble 22 long rifle is the best all rounder.Quote:

True. Though a .223 is a solid deer killer and a 22LRF is a very borderline deer killer.
The way I see it is all the calibers mentioned are right for there chosen jobs. I would hate to live in a world where we could only choose from a few calibers, me I like to pick up a different rifle from time to time and have a play. I love my 300 Win Mag …. but it is a bit hard on rabbits but it will kill them, there are better choices the 223 is one.
