    223 options.

Have a howa 1500 heavy barrel varmint model with boyds stock in 223,nice rifle very accurate but is just to heavy for what i am now wanting to do with it, (carry more around hills). What would be a good replacement 223? Thinking howa mini action but not sure if i like the stock seems a bit to plasticy...or am i just being to fussy as i know these are great shooters? Any advice be helpful or some other options to look at, mainly shooting roos hares rabbits goats. Cheers.

I've been looking all over for a nice .223

I like the Browning X-Bolt. Light, super short action and 5 shot mag

If you really like the Howa 223, I think I may have a Howa Short action (same as your Heavy barrel) with a ranchland barrel and possibly a laminate black stock if you dont want the Hogue. It is brand new and has the internal mag with the flush plate metal. Blued steel $895 with the Hogue stock, $995 with the laminate. Brand new in the box and has been in shop storage for a while.

These do turn up form time to time 2nd hand. CZ and Zastava also worth looking for. CZ will be dearer but Zastava a bit cheaper?.I prefer the Zastava or the Howa to carry with the flush mag, but the CZ is a very nice rifle to shoot.

There is always a Baikal single shot for $500 (new as well) but you would likely have asked for one if that was what you are after....

I bought a Howa mini 223 a couple of years ago. Really accurate; love the gun. But, I really wish they hadn't let Homer Simpson design the magazine latch. It's the one thing that I dislike about it.

When I was deciding what to buy I fell in love with the Remington model 7; but it was $600 dearer. And as I was pretty broke; decided that the Model 7 wouldn't kill goats and deer $600 "deader"...... Sorta regret it a bit as the Model 7 was the nicest "pointing" and handling rifle I'd had a play with. But overall I'm pleased with the Howa; but would prefer a 5-shot flush mag.......

I'm thinking of getting new 7mm-08 (sick of the POS Marlin XS&....). Had a play with a Savage light weight; but didn't like it's handling; just felt clunky..... So maybe a Remmy Model 7......

Have a google at a howa mini action in a excl lite or oryx chassis.

Not sure on your price range, but there is a new Tikka Strata which should be here in the country any day now. Expected by the end of the month anyway.
Its both stainless & cerakoted. Fluted, threaded, comes with muzzle brake, 5 round mag (6 round in ,223), big bolt knob, teflon coated bolt, strata camo stock. (the one in image is not fluted, its a pre-production sample).

Good question. Some have actually shown up today in .308, 6.5cm, .243 and .260 (none in 223 yet). Barrel length is 22.4"
