Just a question re above. From what ive read the optimum barrel length is quite short for velocity(cant remember off the top of my head what it is) if cutting to that length and then shooting subs through it do they still stay subsonic?

IIRC, peak velocity is achieved around the 14" mark. Depends on a few factors though, such as rifling and tolerances in the barrel, bolt action vs semi-auto, and the makeup of the ammo. Some subsonic ammo may well go supersonic at that length.
Update: just had a nosey and this article says about 16" for maximum velocity for .22lr.

the short answer is yes - the hearsay about .22s slowing down in the barrel after optimum is just hearsay, or only to a tiny degree, even with .22cb. But the shorter you go the louder it gets.
I have a 16" with a standard DPT suppressor on it, it is very quiet. The biggest problem I used to have was ammo for the american market seems to assume you running a semi, so runs a bit faster than advertised on non-semis.
