Only clean the barrels of .22 rifles if they have dirt, dust, snow etc. in them. The bullets have a wax coating which protects the bore and it builds up to a stable level where the rifle remains consistently on zero (assuming mounts and scope are good). The only cleaning you should do is the bolt and breech faces, magazine lips, etc. to remove built-up powder residue. External steel parts should be wiped with a lightly oiled rag.
