    . 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor for a Model 7 build

I've got a model 7 which I'm going to rebarrel, I want to fit a 1 in 8 twist barrel and push 140ish grain pills, I understand the 260 has more powder capacity but being quite a short action the Creedmoor let's you seat projectiles out a bit further given the same overall length. Has anyone got any experience on this, do the 6.5mm 140 grain pills make things awkward for loading the 260, or is it still worth it for the extra room for powder even if some of it is lost seating the long pills in deeper? I also like the idea of being able to form 260 brass from 243 or 7mm08 if need be, even though I'll probably stick with store bought brass.

My first option would be a 6.5x47 Lapua, then 260 and lastly 6.5 CM. Based on optimal barrel time with a 140gr bullet, you really have to push the 260 to reach the next node and theoretically they all have the same upper node. The 260 being the longer round of the three it will have slight muzzle velocity advantage over the other two but not enough to make any real difference unless you pushing the round to its limit. The challenge with the 6.5x47 could potentially be the availability of brass here in NZ, but in theory would be the cheapest to run. My only challenge with the 6.5 CM is that everyone has one, but out of the three is most likely the logical and best option.

Ive opted for a 6.5 06 with 143 gr ELD X. Leaves the Creedmor for dead ballistically

That's not really a fair comparison though is it. Its like saying the 6.5 creedmoor is way more powerful than a 6.5 grendel. Totally different case capacitys and cartridge length.

I'd agree 6.5x47 would be perfect in a model 7. Plenty of good quality Lapua Brass here.
I would however go the creedmoor second as its still short enough to run the heavy projectiles at mag length. The 260 is a bit of a miss in short actions it really needs a med action.

The first bit of the sentence above is what the guys said about the .308 Win a few years after that took off. And the .243 Win, and the .223 Rem... Luckily, you redeemed yourself immediately afterwards! Unlike the other fella...

When considering options for a .30 cal, 6mm or .224, we don’t get quite so hung up about going with the aforementioned these days. Very few .30-06 guys having a coronary at the mere mention of a short action .30 these days... And so it will be in 20 years time with the 6.5 Creedmoor. It will be so thoroughly ubiquitous that it will be no different to a .308.

The need to be different, or “special” as I like to say to get up noses, is best expressed by haircuts, the way you dress, what breed of dog you choose, what type of car you drive. Maybe beer preference, like some of the odd fellows on here. Something as fundamentally dull as a piece of brass formed into a particular shape that is ever so slightly different to another piece of brass, isn’t really worth trying to be different about, just for the sake of making a bullet go from A to B, is it. The sensible choice is to go for the one that has the best of everything, be it components, ballistics & accuracy, second hand value, etc. The .260 Rem failed commercially, the 6.5 Creedmoor didn’t. So, pick the Creedmoor.

I am quite sure that if it hadn’t been named “Creedmoor”, but something dull like the 6.5x49, we wouldn’t be having the same conversation...

Sorry, it’s been a long day.

I asked a kind of similar question not too long ago: https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....0-setup-64859/

My conclusion from that was a creedmoor or the likes being slightly shorter would go near perfectly in an action like the model 7. I’ve ended up with a 260 on the way but doing something like what you are thinking would have been damn cool.

I noticed this on the forum too, people's impression can differ significantly between calibers that are practically very similar.

6.5x55: Looked up to with respect
6.5 Creedmoor: Wanna be long range caliber

7x57: Looked up to with respect
    7mm08: Jafa caliber, even worse when it's a T3

Ive just recently done exactly this, i had an old model 7 in 260 rem with a slow twist barrel, it wouldnt shoot anything heavier than 123gr bullets. I picked up a rem 700 takeoff barrel in 6.5CM (8 twist) off the forum for bugger all.

I unscrewed the old 260 barrel and screwed on the new 6.5CM barrel and it headspaced perfectly. If you want to mag fit your rounds in the short 2.8 inch model 7 mag and run 140/143 gr bullets, then the 6.5CM case fits the model 7 action much better than the 260 with the same weight bullet. Ie the bullet can be seated out longer in the neck in the CM case and still fit the mag. Whereas with the 260 case the 140/143 gr bullets are seated right back into the case taking up that extra powder capacity.

So the 6.5CM works well in the Model 7 action. With the minimal load development ive done thus far using Re26 the 6.5CM case can get the 143's really humming, I really doubt that the 260 when hamstrung with a 143gr bullet seated deep into the powder capacity (to fit the M7 mag) would actually perform any better.

I often refer to mine as a 6.5x48 LOL, as i use to make just as many jokes about gaymore shooters as the next bloke. But for this model 7 it made much sense and it was cheap and easy.
