I had previously owned a 308 before my 300 and happily took animals with the 308 to 450mtrs. I can't be bothered with magnum rifles at the moment hence why I wanted input. And yes I am proficient with walking, closing distances is and always has been my preferred method. I just wanted to move away from an almost 10lb rifle. Looks like my new set up if I stay with the Bergara will be around 3.7-3.8kgs. So I have achieved that. Not as light as the tikkas but I like the feel more in both action and stock.

Not wanting to have a go at you personally, I apologise as it does appear that way. What concerns me is that because we have no formal hunting and ethics training in NZ, we have a situation now where young or new hunters can read these threads and conclude that the short barreled bush pig they just bought on TM is 500 mtr capable. It might be in experienced hands, in the right situation where the animal is in open country that allows a follow up shot, can be watched to see where it moves to after the shot but not where it can move to cover and be lost.

This is 145eldx 270 from 22inch barrel Tikka, Labrador for velocity. Handloads, but not hot @3030fps. Factory 145's, although accurate are very slow around 2820fps from same rifle.

But yes it is a lot of money for the weight saving but there are other advantages to the different action and upgraded trigger.
I will get a weight of mine docked to 16" when I am home.

Docked to 16", dpt sup, tally rings, vx3 hd and I replaced the steel bottom metal with an alloy aftermarket.

@300wsm for life what scope are you going to use ?

I've got an extreme hunter in 308 they are a nice rifle, nice action as you say.

@308mate I will be using the V4 4-16x44 I took off my 300. Makes the whole package a little heavier than I wanted but it will be sweet. Can always change later.

@300wsm for life that will be a nice setup. They will take a Rem 700 carbon stock as you're probably aware so you can lighten them that way but yeah they aren't the lightest. Like you I prefer the feel of them to the Tikka.

I'm actually trying to decide on whether to keep my z6i 1-6 on it or put my VX5HD 3-15 on...the VX makes it pretty hefty.

Yea that's the dilemma I have. The v4 is 640g so total weight with scope, suppressor and bipod is 4kg. Still 500g lighter than my last set up. I have the V4 listed for sale and if it sells I will get either a Z3 or a VX3i. Will loose close to 300g with that.

Amen to that, I cleared about 10Kg of fluid a few weeks ago... Not good. Also not recommeded...

On the subject of heart shots, lost one on a private block a few years back much to everyones disgust - a lot of finger poking at the shooter who was a very good and reliable placer of his shots. He swore he'd placed it properly, but despite searching blood trail came to a stop and deer kept going obviously. The crew on the block found it about 7 days later as the 'crawly friends' started work on it - pretty much no argument where it was hit as the pump was mulched. Interesting point, the thing was a good 500m plus from point of impact.

Different animals will go different distances too, once chased a hair that had been popped through the ticker with a .22LR clear across four paddocks and it beat us as it cleared through the stream and over the stopbank on the far side never to be seen again. That would have been a good Km at least before we lost sight of it, solid knockdown, funky chicken impersonation and a large blood pool before it got up and sodded off on us. Good marked hit too, definite ticker whap.

My own experience of yard killing, even point blank skull shots we had failure to kill. Nothing is 100%, but the most reliable placement on offer is the best you can do. I've been quite liking taking the base of the neck and cutting off the supply of go juice to the brain along with hopefully sniping off the main wiring loom - it stops everything so no lactic acid buildup as well as draining the fluids out. Not a reliable long range or anything slighty off-position shot though...
