    270 cal-which one??

I know this may start a passionate (read take the piss) debate about this calibre, Hey I've even jokingly thrown a little shade on the old girl myself in jest BUT....
In the real world is there any ballistic difference between the 270 win and the new 270wsm?
Yes I know ones shorter/fatter than the other one and is meant to be a little quicker. I also know that the ammo for the new jobbie is a bit more expensive also. Hence the question about ballistics only. And don't go near reloading-I'm begrudgingly considering that for my 303 because of interest alone
Don't even go near the 270wby-that does have a significant performance edge but not going there-way to pricey.
    ok let the fun begin...

If you download a ballistic app and out the BC and muzzle velocity of the bullet. And then it should pull up a table if drop and energy and velocity. That would be a good start

Pretty impressed with my mates 270wsm. He uses 130 accubonds for everything. I used it to kill a hind at just over 500yds. Pretty sure tikka has had good results with his 270 win out to 800yds. There are some good 270 projectiles out there now, which had been its limit for a while, compared to say 7mm.

Tahr has had a couple (I think) of 270 SAUM and rates them very highly, you get a high BC bullet running at 3k it don't matter what case it came out of.

youve left Kaiapoi and heading over to haast for a week long fly in trip...you get to Hokitika and realise the box of ammo is sitting on bench at home....which one do you want to bet is available in same brand or at least same weight in shops you are going to pass along the way.
Ive used std .270 win for 30 plus years and really cant complain with results..as for the wsm....mate had one he couldnt get to group worth a damn....thats my sole experience with them.std .270 you can buy hornady factory ammo that will poke projectile out nearly as fast if not faster than the best reloads and MOST guys seem to be more than happy with its accuracy and preformance at business end.
you forgot to mention the 6.8spc ....if you wanted a bush rifle in something different you could do a lot worse than a mini 14 in that calibre...but again ammo is going to need to be ordered in as MOST shops wont have it.
ballistically the ONLY difference will be VELOCITY as both will be firing same projectile or you arent comparing apples with apples.

Very little difference. Although I would hate to cast aspersions on anyone's choice of calibre or sexual partner, it is best summed up by the following mathematical equations.
    270 win = man love.
270 wsm = mega man love moments

If you're not reloading then a 270 win will do everything you want as far as hunting in NZ, the 270wsm just does it with a bit more authority, usually in the range of 2-300fps more in the same length barrel.
Like @tikka I am a big fan of the 150 LRAB in the 270 (I think even @Philipo may be a convert also now.. ) in a 20 inch barrel I could push them at 2850 no worries and that's holding the magical 1000ft/lb out to near on 900yds.
I can push the 150 bullets at near on 3200 fps in my 24" sako 85 which just gives that bit more reassurance out far. If you're reloading you will find the 270 can be a pretty versatile round.
Advantages to those who don't reload are the huge variety and availability of factory ammunition for the 270win, modern projectiles and powders make the heathens silly protests obsolete.
