Sounds like you have already made your mind up mate, personally I'd go .270win. Ammunition is available in every store, cheaper to buy, performance is near identical to the wsm out to medium ranges. From personal experience it's an accurate fast killing calibre providing you do your part as the shooter. 140gr projectiles have been my favorite so far and best factory I've tried has been the Hornady superformance.

My old 270 would shoot 130 Hornady Superformance at 3119fps. My 270 wsm shoots 140gr sst's at 3100ish with a load of 2213sc up its bum. Would have to check the paperwork to confirm the wsm's speed but pretty much the same with the heavier pill.

Not used a 270wsm but did have a non-suppressed 300wsm when they first came out for a couple of years it kicked like a bull elk because it was light and barrel heated up quick culling mobs of goats and deer, I cooked the barrel in 500-600 rounds, long strings of fire. A standard 270win would of fared better, my Sako 270win has done nearly 4000 rounds and shot a 6” five round group at 720m on steel with a 2 o’clock 5mph wind and 12 degree down hill the other day. A decent scope, good ammo and a lightened trigger with a ballistic app is more important than the caliber.
As @Ryan_Songhurst has said if not reloading a standard 270win will work, latter you might get into reloading and push it farther out with higher BC projectiles.

Kiwi Greg....mate did it on trip with us.... only had .22lr ammo with him so didint do much hunting at all.
as for sighting it in.......what a crock of horse shite.....my humble old poohseventy will poke ANY load you care to feed it into a group that you can cover with a playing card at a hundred yards..... so if the smelly stuff hit the whirly thing Ive only got to be within say 150 yards and any deer sized animal is dead. sure some of you fellas like to shoot out to middle of next week and good on you for doing so...but your hunt isnt over if you dont...get as close as you can then 10 yards closer...of all the animals Ive shot over 30plus years of hunting (50ish deer last time I counted) only a handfull were past 150 yards.
Ive left sleeping bag behind...and boots. it happens.

woohoo-I knew it would be an interesting discussion. Good to see everyone out
To the person who suggested a 7mm rem mag-I like them-if a barrel pops up for my project that's cheap, that would be my go to. Or maybe a 300 win mag-that would be second.
lets just say there were physical characteristics of the case that might be beneficial-hence my question. the old original may not work. I'll leave that for later
Nick Harvey from OZ always liked the 150gr jobbies but he handloaded them to as fast as they stayed accurate.
He also rated Winchester supreme partition gold ammo pretty high but from what I can make out that recipe isn't done anymore nor is the bullet.
In saying that there seem to be quite a few 145gr projectiles around in the ready rolled-as long as these are doing 3000fpsish or more They would be fine.

the .270 is, from a scientific perspective far superior to most. I have loaded it with 49 grains of OMG, and the trajectory is not only flat, but actually curves slightly up due to the 'von sahne' effect.
recoil is manly, and the percussive effect of the Hornady Depleted Uranium (HDU) projectiles is devastating at ranges up to seven kilometers.

Loaded down with ground up detonators, it is a dream to plink with and I regularly head shot magpies (standing),

Reloading costs for the .270 is by far cheaper than anything else due to its popularity. (my HDU loads cost $0.27)

Brass lasts for at least 30-40 reloads as it does not require sizing.

The only draw back from this cartridge is its obvious excess in power.... Hunting is humane, but impractical due to the targets limbs and torso separating/disintegrating upon impact.
And gong shooting gets expensive as even s.p. projectiles crater the hardest of alloys.

So, apart from being superior cartridge in every way. The .270 has a lack of popularity due to its extreme power.
    Use enough gun

Buy the rifle you like that suits and fits you best if its in 270 win or 270wsm, there can be some good deals 2nd hand on TM that's how I got my 270wsm. I hand load for it now but started with 50 rounds of 130 gr ballistic tips from Richard Wilhelm for $150 shot well and ended up with 50 cases to reload.

Ah well, might as well wade in.......
I spose you've gotta decide how dead you want an animal. Bit like our old mate Mickey the Duck, Ive only ever used a .270 Win in a few different frames since I was a horny teenager with an old 303. For the last few years I've had a suppressor on mine and its real easy to shoot with. Handloaded 140 grainers seem work really well and chrony at around 2900 fps so anything out to 550yds is in a world of shit. Sure, you can say the same for most short magnum calibres but I don't get to many animals gettin up and walkin away.
Personal preference at the end of the day but a std 270 will kill and animal just as dead as a 270wsm or a 300wsm for that matter, and be cheaper to run
