270 factory loads

What's the go to load for factory 270 stuff these days? Used to be the superformance 140gr sst way back when I bought factory stuff but then we were all told that the hundreds of deer we shot inside 200 with it were killed by magic not the projectile because ssts would blow up that close.
Young fella on the farm is just starting out and got himself a 270 (good man, he will go far) he's not a big time tops hunter or anything like that and will just be using a simple vx1 with duplex reticle so all his shots are only ever going to be out to 300 max, mostly farm hunting sort of stuff, all on red deer.
I have been living here four years now and never really bothered asking around for access to hill country stations to shoot a deer all though have been offered one place anyhow. This young fella hasn't even had his licence in the mail yet and he's managed to grease up about 6 or 7 local farmers and has access coming out his ears so I might have to volunteer myself as his hunting mentor I reckon.
Back on subject, suggestions for a factory load to suit his needs?

When I was sick I used 130 norma

Bloody he'll, I've been here a year and got nowhere with access! Happy to play Sherpa of he needs one, in exchange for half I carry of course

The answer is always gonna be whatever his gun likes... The more expensive better bc bullets you'd hope are more consistent/ accurate but im sure its not always the case..

I have always been of the "go heavy or go home" brigade, so was thinking something 150gr, softish so it expands well at 300yds, but not so soft it flies to bits at 25yds. If I was handloading his rifle (which I may do if we cant come up with something simple he doesn't have to bother me every other week for) I would be looking at using 150gr interlocks and get them going at anything above 2700 (easy) as long as its accurate.
Is there any factory loads similar to this? Found a hornady factory load using interlocks on their website but nothing in NZ

I am using the federal fusion 130 works really well, prior to that on deer in the UK I used Norma 110,

is he using suppressor??? or is he a big strapping lad???/?
if not..... find a 130grn load and go for it.
all the animals shot by me for 30 years went down to 130s,winchester silvertips were my favourite.
federal blue box stuff is accurate and kills just fine.
for hinds n meat animals you wont need to worry about pill being too soft...more the other way around.
rem corelocts aren't as good as they should be as you get some batches that running slow.
short answer...if its got Winchester on the box it will work just fine.

What MD said re 130gn corelockts. I chronnied some factory stuff through my old 700 and they were only doing 2700 fps from a 23" barrel, which is just stupid.

Hes not a small lad...

Best you can do for him will be to allow him the time off to take his 270 to the shop.
Pick out a 30 06 that fits and see if they will give him some money, any money for the 270.

Is he going to notice that's only shooting 2MOA not 0.5? If not most factory ammo

I have several mates with .270 caliber tikkas and sakos, from my own and my friends experience along with what I've heard/read... Federal blue box 130gr is the go to factory load for tikkas and sakos and usually group close to 1/2inch... I also used the 130gr federal fusions with the same accuracy on bull tahr out past 300yd before I got into reloading...

Any factory ammo will do minute of deer out to 200. One will shoot better than others, and that will show up on the 'pretrip test shot.' Once he's used up a few packets, the confidence to take a longer shot will be there, and he should've worked out which one is best. The brands which aren't shooting tight groups will still be fine for the closer tight shooting

I too used to think the 270 a waste of time, my first cf was a sako forester in 270, came with a couple of hundred cac nzfs ammo. Accurate but killing seemed erratic, skin pops or no expansion, sold it and got a zkk fox 222. Problem was the bullets that cac used not the gun. Yes they are noisy, burn loads of powder and there are lots of better choices including the parent, but theyve been round for nearly 90 years and wont be going away anytime soon.

yes, when people talk shit about the 270 these days I have learned to be the bigger man and take the mature course of action by putting my fingers in my ears and poking out my tongue and yelling "I cant hear you, I cant hear you"

I use Federal power shok 130 grain in the 270 calibre and i would recommend it. Accurate and good stopping power in my experience with it.

Worth reminding the 7mm mob, that there is in fact, only one true 7mm, and it is called .270 Winchester!:P

Fed Blue box 150grainers shot best in mine before I took up reloading.

Hornady 130gr ssts shoot really well in mine. I'll use Highland or PPU stuff if I'm just goin out to pop goats cos it's a whole lot cheaper (still shoots MOA though).

$$ not an issue = Barnes Vortex ammo if you can get it.

$$ an issue = Highland 130 SP.

Had very good results with the 130 SST superformance and Fed Fusion also.

Remington is the only brand I would avoid.

I saw some of that in my local the other day. have you had any issue with pencilling using that TTSX tip?

Out of interest I chronographed some Sellier and Bellot 130 grain a few weeks ago and got 2770fps (With a 23 inch barrel) which I found disappointing.

For factory ammo I would try Federal Fusion or just Winchester.

But I reload for everything.

@300_BLK I'm under the impression the local supplier is no longer selling this... My local no longer stock it & that's what I was told. Although the PPU stuff is supposedly the same???

No, but that said I was shooting Fallow and they were all head or neck shots. I have had a lot of experience with TTSX in .224, .264 and .308 and they have all performed as advertised, 4 razor sharp petals and 90% weight retention. The wee .224 50gr TTSX has transformed the killing power of the 223 for boiler room shots on big Red stags etc.

they shoot even betta if you use a couple boxes waikato for a bipod

It's the only rifle I own (at the moment), so it'll do for goats. I'll pick up a .223 in the near future. Still take the back legs & backstraps.

You should see what the 338 Lapua does :thumbsup:

Shoot all my goats with a 270, waste is minimum, I was thinking of getting a 223 but I can.t see the advantage.
