    I have a 270win rem700 , 18inch barrel with dpt. 150gr soft points for bush hunting.
I’d have no issues chopping one again to 18inch

    Down to 20" is fine.
My as factory .270Win Sako 75 Finnlight barrel is 20 7/8" (7/8" makes a difference according to the Mrs )

I would recommend the steel baffle for the DPT cans, as the blast can be erode the alloy baffles pretty quick.

Almost no point bedding the standard plastic stocks.
They’re too soft and flex too much for it to be worthwhile.
A decent aftermarket stock will usually improve accuracy a decent amount.

You can bed the standard plastic stocks if you stabilize the front end first. Check out Nathan Forsters info on this (Terminal Ballistics) has great step by step guides on how to do it.

If its a 'close range bush gun' whats wrong with just leaving it at 22" and no can, not going to be shot much in anger ?

Even with a can it will still need hearing protection, so a longer barrel is no worse for ears in all reality

18" and you'll still be able to shoot 500 yards piece of cake.
Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Duley's .270 bushpig data superformance behind a 145gr eldx was still going 2950fps.
Why have a longer barrel than you need!

Duleys did it with factory federal stuff too if memory serves me right....

leave barrel long, stick a can on it,bed it and for the love of God put a decent bottom end scope on it..no more than 3x so a 3x9 is just about ideal....

20” is a pretty good compromise if still wanting to stretch a bit every now and then. Even 18” be ok as mentioned. Put a DPT magnum can on it and away ya go. Don’t worry about the stainless baffle, it’s just extra weight. Treat the first alloy baffle as an expendable and just replace it when needed which won’t be all that often (haven’t had to do it yet on any of my short tubes).

Yeah I’ve done this a number of times. Works well and is a heap cheaper than a carbon one!
