    280 Ai shooting distances

Hi all I'm looking at building a new lightweight carbon rig (barrel and stock) ,for sort of a good allround gun, that I can stretch its legs if I need to .It will be a long action ,non magnum build as I have a donor sitting in the safe . I like the look of the 280 Ai and was wondering what sort of distances people are knocking deer over with there's ?? I'm thinking 1 in 8 twist and 24 inchs long (sound about right) I've shot my mates 280 out to 400 yards on but haven't used a 280 Ai so any help would be a great help cheers.

Pm Chainsaw, his custom rem 700 is a screamer for accuracy! About 150 fps behind a rem mag basically from memory, use the 154gr SST and that should get you to 600.

    For your idea it's perfect

You will be able to push a 162 at around 2950, so run the numbers on that. 600-700 yards should be no drama energy wise.

My mate runs a 280AI and I have a 7Saum running 162 at 3k (Ever so slightly more case capacity than the 280AI)

My mod 7 7Saum with 22" barrel, fluted and lightened etc and carbon stock weighs in a fracton over 7 lbs with a fairly heavy 4-16 scope.

You will certainly enjoy carrying it compared to that grs stocked cannon I've seen you with at the range

I would go with 284win even in a long action. There is probably an improved version around somewhere.

I use 162g AMAX and 160g Accubonds in my 280AI.

I’ve used this rifle on Reds, Tahr and the occasional Chamois between 50-500m with no issues.

The longest shot to date has been a Tahr at 570 yards and I’d be comfortable pushing it a bit further in the right conditions.

284 win or improved version is a great option in a long action.

I also have two 284's. Both rechambered 708's. One has 22.5" tube running 150 NBT at 2970. I shot a red in perfect conditions 3 weeks ago at 752 yards. Base of neck dropped it on spot. I was backup for a mate that wanted the shot, I watched his bullet drop 1 metre in front of the deer. Then I fired and hit where I aimed with 17.25 moa dialed on . My longest shot to date.

The 2nd 284 I've just put together. Superpig style t3 17" tube with magnum Dpt right back to fore end of stock. Amax seated right out fits the t3 LA mag very well.

Nice. I'm just getting a 280AI going too. What powders are people using for 24" barrel using the 160-162gr projectiles? 2213sc, 2217?
    Thanks.

I'm using RL22 - so 2217 or the new temp stable RL22 = RL23 would be best options. RL22 is very hard to come by, RL23 is available at present so long as you live in Sth Is.

Have shot a couple of deer at 500m and a few tahr out to 600m with my 280. If the conditions are right.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
