    . 284 users

    Hey guys,

I have a .284 currently, it has a 24 inch barrel and an ASE UTRA can on the end...contemplating a chop to 20 inches...currenly getting 2734fps with 2209 pushing a 168gr Berger Classic Hunter.....

Keen to know the details of your .284 set ups...barrel length and load etc.

I’ve got two 284s, ones a Tikka 22in TF bbl get 3010 fps with 162 ELDMs & RL26, or 2950 fps with RL17. The other is Wby Mk5 Ultralight with factory 20in bbl running 160 TMKs at 2830 fps with Superformance or 3000fps with 150 ELDX & RL17.
When the bbl is shot out on the Wby Mk5 I’ll be going to 18in bbl.

Don’t go shorter than 18”. A mate got one cut at 16 and regretted it.

You’re getting more out of your 284 than I was out of my 21” rem mag and the 162s at 2965fps.
I had a 18” 284 chopped down from 22” and regretted it, I think 20” is a good all rounder launching a 162 at 2800ish what more do you need as an all round rifle for NZ hunting

Yes, agree 20in is probably best bbl length for an all rounder 284, but RL26 is a game changer

    Love the 284…..

Down to one 284 rifle now - 20inch Tikka and it’s the perfect balance. Running 162ELDX with Belmont 760 at 2770fps or RE16 does 2800 and fills the case nicely. These are seated quite long with a long action bolt stop and mag. I also have a load with 140 Ballistic tips at 3000 with the RE16.

About to sit down a load a few more today before heading South end of next week

One correction to my numbers above - the 150 ELDx RL17 load at 3000 fps is the 22in bbl Tikka. The same load in 20in bbl Mk5 is doing 2910fps

Just got my mits on some re26 to go along with 162 eldms. How much re26 are you guys using? I’ll back it off a few grains and start there. Looks to be the magic powder!

Running Lapua brass, 162 AMAX at COL 3.170 and 60gn RL26. Pressure signs at 60.5gn. Start lower & work up carefully. If you’re using different brass you may hit pressure sooner.

Nice, I think should be safe to start 57-57.5 grains, lapua brass and a long throated chamber. Should hum along nicely with a 26bbl
