Thread: 300 Win Mag Project?

So I am a bit nutty for long range shooting at the moment. Its a great way to spend the money I now don't spend taking the boat out over the Manukau Bar.

I have shot a few events including the NZ Vortex Mountain Challenge and the next weekends Alpine Long Range. I am shooting a 7mm Mag and its great fun. I have a 330 Dakota getting sorted at the Gun Smiths that will be my (who cares if its stupid rifle). To take the strain off the 7mm I am looking to get a 300 Win Mag. I have a 1949 Winchester M70 Action that I am considering using for this project. A suitable off the shelf rifle would be cheaper and less trouble by the time I pay for a new Barrel. Action truing,Trigger, Bedding, Cerakote finishing the stock I have etc. etc.

So the questions I am considering are.

1 Is this old action suitable for this type of build. (strength and inherent accuracy

2 Is there a factory rifle out there that would do the same job and not go to the expense of a semi custom build. It would need at least a 1:9 twist to shoot 230-240gr bullets. Tikka Super Varmint 1:11 Remington Sendaro 1:10 so no good.

Any out of the box suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a Rem 700 xcr tactical in 300 win mag - it was a good shooter but iv since had a go with Rem 700 5r 300 win mag and it was alot better accuracy wise and the barrel was way easier to clean.
So I would definitely get the 5r Rem 300 win mag if I was in your position.

If you are interested I have a heavy barrelled target rifle in .308 built on a p14 late model winnie action. They are strong enough to upsize. I was considering rechambering it to 300 win mag for a similar purpose, but have shelved that idea now. Twist is 1:9 from memory and I have shot 220 gr through it. Single shot action only though

Thanks guys. I think I would struggle to use a 308 length action for a belted magnum cartridge thanks for the offer. As I said the trouble with the Rem 700s as nice as they are is their 1:10 twist is too slow for a 230-240 gr bullet. I will keep pondering on it.

Used 230 bergers through the Rem 700 it was a solid 1/2 moa shooter with them it also loved the 208 amax ,don't get to hung up on twist

Thanks VTF for you insights. I don't want to finish a project only to find it wont shoot the projectile I want. How far out did you shoot the 230gr Bergers. I want stability out past 1600m. Their stability calculator says ok at muzzle but marginal once the velocity starts to fall off. I would be interested to know how your Remington went way out there.
300winmag to looks like you will have a real weapon with that rig. Mine will be a much more budget model.

Looking at the price of a Remington 5r (around $2500) , if it was my project, I d go with a custom action like a Barnard and a 30 or 32or 34" barrel.
It might end up a bit higher in price but you will be able to push those heavy pills easily without stressing too much your brass and your barrel.
My first long range rifle was a Remington rebarrelled in 300 win mag with a thirty inch barrels. It shot very well, but I never took it past a km.
I have rechambered it in 300 ultra mag, launching the 208 amax at 3100fps, but we were loosing the vapor trail before reaching 1700 yards .

Regarding the p14 action offer above, the p14 is a very long action. It is know to have been rebarrelled in the 577 Tyranosaurus cartridge by A-square . I own one in 300 h&h but with a1 in 14" target barrel.

I have a Ruger M77 MkII LA that has been built up to .300 Blaser Magnum (unbelted) unfortunately haven't had a chance to stretch it's legs out, but from what I understand more than capable out to 1200m +

The barrel and rest of the work was done by Hugh Bradley, it is a 25in 5R heavy barrel 1:10 capable of throwing heavier pills, threaded for suppressor. 2 tone cerakoted (all stainless).

I've used Norma 200g Oryx in it and obtained <1/2 MOA at 100m. only 57 rnds down it.

It is currently for sale as I'm not likely to use it to it's potential, just throwing out there as an option.

As a side there are brand new dies and 100 new Norma brass available.

You would have a custom rifle built on a pre-64 M70 - the rifleman's rifle - in a classic caliber. Nothing more to say really.

Dont worry about twist rates too much. My sako 85 is an 11 twist and im shooting 230s at 2940 fps and they are extremly accurate

Puffin you are right I will probably end up building on the M70 action but sometimes a different perspective can offer better solutions. I know what you mean Pongo at the muzzle or inside 1000m things can be ok but get down to under 1000fps and a slower twist rate can take its toll with instability especially past the transonic I am glad that rifle is working well for you.

Allgood but you do realise at 2000m its still going 1020ftps. How far are you wanting to shoot? 2km is a fair distance

Pongo the property we shoot on up Burkes Pass sort of goes forever. We have shot out to 1600 and will be down again in a month and would like to shoot out further. Scope clicks become an issue so hold overs become the norm. It is great fun and a mathematical challenge.
