    3006 questions

Hi I’m relatively new to cal have couple questions, first what would be the best weight projectile? It’s an nv gun so inside 400 yards and second I like 17/18” barrel am I better off with 308 and roughly 10 grns less powder and similar speeds? Cheers

The 06 can give you 100 to 150 fps more in any bullet weight than a 308. If you're serious about 400 yds, I think there's really no advantage to be had with the 06. In either case 165 gr would probably be my choice of bullet weight.

165 to 180gn projectiles is where the 30/06 does its best work. for the short barrel forget the 30/06 and go for the 308 IMO. 30/06 would be better served with a 22" barrel.

I dont know the answer to this but wouldn’t it depend on what sort if animals you are hunting ?

If you’re night shooting, did you choose a larger cart to help them fall on the spot and be easier to find ?

Just wondering if a flat shhooting bullet is better in the dark when ranging is uncertain ?

I’ll be interested to hear the advice of others more knowledgeable.

I've had really good results with 178 ELD M, but in a 22 inch barrel. From memory I'm getting around 2750-2800fps
If my work annoys me, I cull them

    Likewise I'm getting fantastic performance with 178gn ELDM'S 2930fps out of the 24" barrel.....granted I'm Ackley improved.
I reckon the advantage of case volume with the dirty 06 is best realized with heavier projectiles (if you can mitigate the extra recoil).
But it needs the barrel length to use that advantage, personally I would've shorten it any further or you will just have a long action 308 that needs more powder to achieve similar results....Just my 2 cents (steps back......puts on flame suit)
