HI Guys
well got my Rem 788 rifle back with nice 30 cal DPT suppressor all fitted.
Next step is some ammo.
I never use centre fire so a bit out of touch. It's a very occasional Deer rifle for both Reds and Fallow.
308 cal, just wondering what factory ammo you guys would recommend to do the job.

Factory 150g, either Hornady Whitetail or Federal Blue box. Both accurate enough from my Rem 700, and good performance on deer.
Fed blue box 150gr always used to work well for me....if going to a tipped projectile like SST or similar I would go up to at least 165gr to retain decent penitration.

If you are not happy with accuracy of federal, try the Hornady whitetail, or Remington Corelokt. The Corelokt is an excellent bullet.
From there you are getting into more expensive stuff with flash harry bullets, which may have an ever so slight advantage if you are shooting at longer ranges. But to my way of thinking at that point you would be better off reloading or getting custom reloads done up for you.
I've tried most $40-$50 boxes of factory ammo in 150g. Both Federal powershock and American Whitetail shoot pretty well for me. Winchester were average. I've stuck with the whitetail as I chronographed these and I find the Hornady app easier to use for dialling in MOA. I'm running a Howa 308 with DPT can.

+1 for Belmont 150s. One hole groups at 50m.
This could be an awesome option, uses the same projectile as the Hornady whitetail (Hornady 150gr SP). I (and many others) use this projectile as a good cheap option when handloading. If it shoots well in your rifle then you wont beat it for value and you'll get pretty good performance on game.Quote:

Yeah, you are frankly overwhelmed with choice for the good old .308.
When I did use factory ammo I used Remmie 150gn flying bricks (corelocts) or the more aerodynamic Hornady 150gn SSTs.

Another option I've had really good results with is the Fiocchi loaded with the 150gr SST. Was my go to before I started reloading.
I haven't shot many deer, just not my thing but when I have it was always with corelocks, never lost an animal but was just wondering if they were old school ( which they are but still sounds like they are held in high regard )

Sounds like 150 gr soft points weather Rem, Fed or Hornady will do the job .

However, I have now tried the Hornady Superformance 150gr GMX load, and wouldn’t you know it, shoots them under an inch at 2700fps to the same POI at 100m as the 180s!
So now I use the 180gr in the Bush (GMX would work great but at $4-50 a round I will use the cheaper option!) and carry the GMX in my bino pouch in case I get a longer shot.
Tops I just take the GMXs.
Need to get my reloading setup sorted once I buy another house!

Ive found the 150 s&b stuff accurate in my 308 also the 3006 and 7x57 stuff is accurate as well funny shaped projectile on it
@Nugget connaisseur do you know what brass they load with? Shame they dont seem to do 20's at the moment. Bugger to buy 100 rounds and find out they wont shootQuote:

Im sure you can pass on 4 boxes at no loss if you find it doesnt shoot well. But i have not seen it shoot bad in anything yet. RPR, Ar10 and 2 hunting rifles all shoot good with it. But in saying that rifles are individuals.
Maybe you could ask around and see if someone locally has a box laying around
