    308 vs 7mm08 all rounder?

Righto, Trying to do some rationalisation of the collection.

Design brief: All purpose hunting rifle (deer, tahr etc), bush, broken scrubby country and tussock tops. Will be the rifle that i use 90% of the time.

    Have option of:

    16" 308 Tikka
    20" 7mm08 Tikka

Scope fitted will have dialing ability and I can reload for both. Both running a suppressor.

I know both will work well up close and comparing the ballistics tables there's not a lot in it out to a reasonable distance. The 308 will be slightly lighter and handier at 16"

7mm08 will be slightly quieter over the dog with the 20" barrel (the 308 is pretty nasty even suppressed!)

Am i missing anything? what would be your pick for a all rounder?

do you prefer bush or tops...bush=308 tops=7mm/08 only cause you have longer barrel so can make faster load.
which one is the more accurate????
other than that its a coffee or tea coke or pepsi question.

I would prefer the 708 with Nosler Btip either 140 or 120 both work well.

Think you are probably right, very little in it! 7mm is fractionally more efficient than the 308 @ 16" but not much in it! Hmmmmm

150eld-x could potentially be a do it all load if I can push it quick enough out the 20" barrel.

7mm08 , You can always shorten the 20inch barrel if you decide its to long , but you cant add any to the 308 .

For an all rounder the 20 inch 7mm08 would be hard to go past. I shot a number of animals out to about 450m with my 18inch 7mm08. Everything died. That being said the 308 will do plenty well out to 350 400ish

If it helps 150 Eld-x factory Precision Hunter goes 2710FPS on my 20inch 7mm08.
308 is good too, 168Eld-M is a good all round load that reaches out.
BC doesn't matter, until you need to dial

@winaa that is interesting! Can get about 2700ish with 150gr in the 308. But if I can do that with the 7mm 150gr eldx you get a step up in bc for longer range stuff.

@Hunty1 Yeah I don't know what powder Hornady use but I can't quite get there with ADI powder (I get to the high 2600's), maybe RL-17 could do it.

@Hunty1 if you are after the do-it-all rifle, I'd say the 7mm08. I love my .308, but I reckon the 7mm is the sweet spot for NZ. Certainly if I was starting again (knowing what I know now) I'd get a 7mm08.

Cut it to 18" perfect for what u are after.

    Will u sell both 308 and 280?

Nothing wrong with a small hole, if you know what you are doing

I've owned both Hardy and DPT cans, including a Hardy AR15 Ti can. I personally think the DPT suppresses better for the size.

My 2c - 16" 308 and ditch the hardy for a DPT with extra baffles. As it is so short use a stainless baffle for the first one.
