Not a silly idea, ODL could do it with the sintered titanium he uses for his cans I'm sure. There was a place in Texas that used similar technology to "print" a 1911 frame. Of course, those machines aren't your home-grade 3d printer for printing ABS plastics etc, they cost hundreds of thousands of dollars
the idea of a titanium lower isn't super necessary though.
