Sir Samuel Baker, British explorer, naturalist, big game hunter and author, recounted in one of his books having a 2 bore rifle made for him. He said that whenever he fired it, it spun him around or even knocked him off his feet, and gave him a bleeding nose. This was mentioned in an article by gunwriter Finn Agaard which I read many years back. He described Baker as being ‘clearly a man of some resolution’ - which had to be very accurate assessment!

Dont know about the 4 bore recoil but I believe the 460 weatherby and the bigger equivalent (up past 10000ftlb of energy) can detach retinas after a handful of shots
