No it's not. All you'll do is get frustrated, and leave wounded animals to die in the bush, especially if you're used to the knock down power of a 7mm mag or 30-06. A .308 will be suitable for most NZ game animals. Maybe look elsewhere on this forum for debates about the suitability of a .223 to bring down deer like reds, sika and whitetail. A .223 will be great for fallow and goats, but unless you're a good headshot specialist, don't give the anti-hunting lobby any reason to start crying "cruel hunters" by letting deer run away with your little pills.
