I have an h&r trapdoor great fun to shoot! On levers I have been told to stay away from the micro rifling, there has been an SS on take me that has tempted me, maybe worth a look,Gun City Chch I think

Not the easiest to find a 45-70 Marlin in stock.... lots have them on the web sites but lots are sold.. I nearly purchased on a while back.... Then no one had stock, they do turn up on trademe a bit (to much for some...like the idea but not the recoil)

I ended up buying a 338 barrel to make a 338SAUM and but open sites on and a detachable scope......but I haven't had time to build it yet

I always wanted a 45/70 too. I had at one stage even purchased 60 rounds of factory ammo in anticipation. Since sold and idea shelved. Would have been a single shot on a Martini action. I still have the barrel for it somewhere. Where does the 450 Marlin fit in Leathel?

Maca - I will have a serious look for it. I know it is a plain blank which would need profiling. I cannot remember though whether it was suitable for smokeless or only BP.

    marlin all the way!
i have many lever guns. the 45/70 probabaly gets the most use.
i have hunted everything including buffalo with them.
it is so versatile, you can load from super mild that a 12yo can shoot, to super wild that will bring water to any tough guys eyes.
they are a bit like a rainbow in terms of trajectory but that is cool it is just a case of being realistic with the range that you are shooting
at the moment, i have my guide gun setup as a bush gun, i have fitted a peep sight to it and i am more than happy with the accuracy of the rifle, for its purpose.
keep an eye out for a marlin in good nic, they come along every now and then, you wont be disapointed.
i call mine "the one hit wonder" it never needs a follow up.

Reloaders carry the baikal double rifle in 45/70, would make an awesome bush rifle!

Don't over look a 444 Marlin if it turns up flatter trajectory less recoil very similar performance on game.Do not be put off by Microgrove rifling it makes no difference unless shooting really heavy for calibre projectiles. And then it's not the style of rifling but the rate of twist and the later Ballard rifling is faster so will stabilise heaver bullets. There is not an animal in NZ that needs anything other than the standard bullet weights avaiable in either 444 , 45-70 , 450 Marlin.Any of these are very very effective in the bush or anywhere. I know I use a 444 my son a 45-70 never needed a 2nd shot bang flop DRT.It still requires proper bullet placement as allways.
