Thread: 45 colt and 410 shotguns

What's the go with making a 410 run 45 colt?
There seems to be guns that run both but they must have 11.4mm bores to run a 45 cal projectile?

Can you then treat them like a low power rifle running trail boss and cast lead 45 cal projectiles?

I have a robust little 410 single shot that would be great to sling a 500gr cast projectiles I have a mould for

Why would you, what is the advantage over a solid slug ?

Lee used to make a 410 slug mould. With the pistol cartridges I think the chamber length of the 410 may cause obturation problems with the short case. Possibly easier to use 410 empties reprimed with a paper wad and slug or round ball. Ive done this in a 12 gauge and they are accurate to 50 metres probably more with a rear sight as well. It sort of duplicates the brown bess.

heavier payload, solids all seem to be cup shaped

Not a recommended practice and piss-poor results regarding both power and accuracy. Go and buy a rifle. Stop trying to play golf with a cricket bat!

Thats because a hollow base helps stableise a long unspun projectile by creating turbulence at the base that prevents it tumbling. The accuracy achieved is suprisingly good with projectiles up to 2.5 times calibre in length.

Is there any benefit to hollow basing subsonic cast projectiles?
anything to prevent tumbling sounds like a good move

or is the effect negated by spinning the bullet?

iv got a 308 that likes to tumble sometimes, sub load. seems to hit where its suppose to but sometimes sideways

Dont know but plenty of short for calibre black powder rounds were hollow based like the snider and had long 1:70 or so twist rates.

The .45 Colt bullet diameter is .454" your mould will be .459" could be a tight fit be very careful with load development

im going to give that projectile a miss, even without the expansion during firing its tight as a mofo
id say it would run a high risk of not coming out the end

i think ill stick to the shotshells for now

they are very impressive subsonic

without any choke its ok......wouldnt do it with choked barrel....you can buy 3" solids for the .410 think of them like a .243 winchester at 250 yards (as projectile weight and speed similar) its ok but getting marginal if you not spot on...a far better bet is .410 buckshot...5 times 00 buck fair honking along in a row like little ducklings just has to be naasty.

the .410 loaded with birdshot is pretty versitile for self defence too......
