Yep, if it was supported by high bc bullets.
for ranges under 400 yards YOU DONT NEED high B C bullets and if you going to shoot past that you will be using rangefinder and twiddling and fiddlin anyway so could use .45/70 with flat nosed projectiles and still hit your target provided you had enough elevation.....as said before the commercial buffalo hunters were doing it without any of the modern gear ,what is it now???100?? years ago,so we dont really have any excuse with all the modern shit .
look up what them fellas did,it was amazing feats of marksmanship and wholesale slaughter if they kept clean killing, wound one and herd stampeded.
Out to 400yds speed rules, 400+ BC rules
Turns out to all be very interesting.
So made a call to run with the 6.5 06 and some new dies arrived a couple of days ago. I was surprised how little gets trimmed off the .270 cases to form 6.5 06, and obviously the die reforms the neck to 6.5mm rather than .270in.
Which reminds me, better bump all that .270 gear I'm flicking on.
Now just have to find some load data using 143gr ELD X and 2209 or 2213.............any ideas??
I found 2209 pretty slow in mine I'm using 2217 or 2219 cant remember which off the top of my head
Got some 2217, 2213, and some blasting powder on the shelf so maybe 2213
See what happens
just had a look go with the 2217 ive tried 120gr and 140gr with it and it went well
Go with slower powders, I started off trying 2213SC, RL19 then 2217. But recent load dev with RL25 has given best speed and accuracy with 140 gn pills. If I had more RL26 then I’d go that way but have plenty of RL25 on hand and it’s working real goooood
22 Inch barrel and with a compact suppressor it effectively gives me 24 inchs
Anyone got any starting load weights??
I can give you best guess by looking at 30/06 and 270 and 25/06 to work out where it SHOULD SIT.... but nothing more accurate.... will check my manuals and see if got hard data and get back to you soon.
woohoo...bingo...got the good stuff in adi manual nov 2004
6.5/06 24" barrel
142 grn projectile....AR2213sc START 45GRNS 2559FPS 50,000PSI
MAXIMUM load 50.3 grns AR2213sc 2795FPS 62,900 PSI
shit thats hot????
so thats projectile tiny bit lighter
so
160grn projectile46grn start 50grn max AR2213sc
129grnprojectlie 47grn start 51 grn max AR2213sc
120grn projectile 48grn start 52.5grns max AR2213sc
you should be able to suss it from there?????
2217 loads there too...much fuller case
142 grn projectile AR2217 49grns start 2555fps 49800psi maximum 55.0C 2816fps 63,300psi so hot hot hot
hope that enough to get you going bud.
In 6506ai I was loading up around 56-57 gns with 2217..... but the ai has got slightly more case capacity. RP brass, 140 gn partitions or 140 AMAX, seated long, 1:9 barrel twist. Some of the US info with 6506ai and 2217 shows loads up to 59 - 60 gns but I would think that’s getting pretty damn hot. You should be ok working up carefully from 52 gns
Appreciated fellas, Thanks
you should get away with 2213sc, but compare the load density and muzzle velocity 2209 might be more economical. 2208 start around 41.5 - 42gr 2213sc start around 44gr.Attachment 150123
the dirty06 case maxs out at around 60 grains of MOST powders....low 40s is hardly a well fulled case.
I dont load 6.5-06 but did load up both 270 and 25/06 last night.....2213sc for the .25 and H4831 for the .270 same powder ,different label 53 grns for one and 56 for other so the cases were filled till had little air space left inside. which Im told is desired result.
In 6.5/284 I use 2209 @ 58.5 with a 140 for 2940 fps. Been up to 51.5 but destroys lapua brass in 3 firings.
With 2213 I have to go to about 51.5 gns.
I’d also look at RL22 if you have some in your supplies but if not no drama as 13 or 17 should be fine.
.
You could perhaps look at these two threads Bos, good info from when I was starting out;
Shoot as much 4831/AR2213 as you like, your wasting time and barrel life.
2217/H1000 or up
https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....jectile-50840/
So far I've tried these combinations
140 interlock 53.5gr 2217 2790fps
120 smk 58gr 2217 3068fps
120 gold dot 58gr 2217 3127fps
120 gold dot 49.5 2209 2842fps
At the moment I'm using 140 gold dots but haven't had a decent try as my bolt kept falling apart
Well that's a concern.
Yea the first couple of times it was I think I've fixed it tho gave it a test run yesterday and seemed to go ok it's a real piss off when it happened after the first shot in a comp a few months back
Thanks for the reference
Heaps of info amongst that lot, just need to sort through it a bit.
I can probably get rid of the 2213sc as its not gonna be much use to me,and see if I can find some Reloader or N560,or 2217.
Whats the general concensus on magnum primers??
Ive used them for years with 140 / 145 grainers in the .270 and reackon they work well when youve got around 90%plus case load of powder.
Theres a few comments supporting them in the 6.5 06 under similar case load capacities
I use magnum primers but not sure if it makes a big difference
I use magnum primers in all my large rifle uses..BECAUSE they were cheap and back when I started loading some 20ish years ago close to half the powders I used in poohseventy called for a magnum primer...well the manuals did anyway...
other than when did stint trying out subsonics Ive never seen need to use std primers.
Nosler published data for the 6.5 / 06 in at least two of their manuals that are on my shelf. Data for the 140 gn projectiles in a 24" tube:
In the earlier manual (third ed.) H4350 (2209) - 44.5 - 48.5 gns 2640 - 2810 fps, H4831 (2213SC) 45.5 - 49.5 gns 2620 - 2800 fps, RL 22 46.5 - 50.5 gns 2660 - 2860 fps.
In the later manual (sixth ed.) the loads for the above powders remain the same. RL 19 and Vit 165 added as slower powders with slightly higher velocities - 2900 fps.
140gner at 2900fps is nothing startling from that case. I used to get 3000fps from my 270win with 140gn Nosler ABs and 60gns of N560. I'm sure those "maximums" would be a bit conservative (not that I suggest anyone start load development over them).
hmmmm I just happen to have some 140 interlocts and some N560 on hand.....dont own a chronicgraph so it would be moot exercise anyway....
2950 with a 140 in a 6.5-284 is about the right balance between velocity, and case life so would think you would want much more velocity in the similar capacity 06 case. Another 50-100 fps maybe?
Gonna aim for around 2900 - 3000 fps with the 143 Gr ELDX's. Only because Ive got the projectiles sitting on the shelf from my mates 6.5 x 55
With that sort of velocity I figure shots out to 400 yds are "meat and potatoes', and anything out to 600 is still effective killing potential with reasonable energy. Thats about what I had with the old .270 and dont see why this should be any less achievable
Thinking towards 2217 or Re 22, provided its still available.
If you have AR2213sc I'd give it a go first.
