    6.5-284 barrel length

Have a 26inch barrel to go on a tikka. Was thinking about trimming it down a bit to make more handy and perhaps use a suppressor.

I read 6.5prc so quite well in 20inch barrel. They have a little more capacity than 284 case though.

I was thinking 22.5-23inches to make reso handy while still more performance than my .260.

    Aiming for ~2900fps with ar2217.

    Appreciate thoughts.

Mate of mine is getting > 2800 with 156 bergers from a 20". He's using the fairy dust that is Re26 though. AR2217 lags behind. 2900 will still be acheivable with a longer barrel and a slightly lighter bullet.

Youll want to stick with 24" if your to use 2217. Otherwise it starts losing the gains the 6.5-284 has over calibers like the 6.5creed and 260rem

    cant comment on the 6.5 version but have 2 different 284's. Ones a 20in bbl and I'm getting ~2830 - 2850 with 160 - 162gn pills (TMK & AMAX) and a 22in bbl which gets me another 80 - 100 fps, running 162AMAX at 2930fps with RL17.
If that translates to your 6.5 284 then 22 - 23in bbl should be a good compromise

yeah, maybe there's a reason they come in 24inch from factory. I'd be annoyed to end up with an inefficient 260.

So make it 22" chamber it in 6.5x55 and load it properly, not fussy on powder, and that is about to become real important, especially for those that did not futureproof their reloading components. Too few people understand loading the Swede in a modern action.

    I have a 260 already.

The barrel is chambered in 6.5-284 already so that's what ill run.
Think ill keep the barrel at 24 and run it bare.
I could prolly get more suitable powders and keep the 2217 for mates rem mag.

Thinking rl23, hybrid 100v or winchester staball6.5. Anyone running these?

I had a 20" 6.5/284 and was very disappointed with its speed using 2217 I could just get 2800 with 130 grain pills.
My tikka 18" .260 gets 2816 with the 143 ELDX

If it’s for the bush then you’ve probably got better options, if it’s for the tops (which is where I use mine) the extra length isn’t an issue. You can comfortably shoot out to 7-800y and at that range taking the time to put on your suppressor isn’t an issue. Anything under 300 and your POI won’t change enough to matter so your good for any quick shots.

Yes, good to know thanks. I think what you say is where I'm heading with it. Best to keep to the strengths of the cartridge and not try to do it all.

The low es that 2217 provides in the 6.5 Norma plus reasonable but not top speeds in a 24” tube makes it worthwhile.

I got a 20 inch prc and a mate has a 6.5 284 20 inch. They both kill stuff. Don't over think it mate. Goes bang and things die. Easy

Just bringing this thread back to life. The 6.5-284 interests me as it is something a bit different to the standard. Ballistically, very similar to the 6.5PRC, however, I like something a bit different. Things I'd like to know, is barrel length - can you get away with a 22" barrel, or is 24"+ needed.
Barrel wear - I've read that accuracy comes at around 800-1000 rounds max
Is it worth building over a .260, Creed, or PRC?

Keen to hear your thoughts out of interest.

    Thanks

    I had a 20" 6.5x284 a few years ago and performance was very disappointing 130grn at 2800fps.
I've looked at the 6.5 PRC and unless you go for a 24" barrel I still think the .260 on a long action Tikka or a 6.5 Creedmoor is a better option.
A 18" .260 will give you 2800 with the 143 ELDX and a Creedmoor will do the same with a 20".
That's just what I've found after trying more than a few 6.5 cals
