6.5 or 7mm08

So I feel like I'm in bed of a bit of retail therapy and like the look of the howa superlite seeing as I don't think I'll see a kimber for a while.
Just tossing up between 708 and Creedmoor. I know I know the latte cartridges but for me they would suit well for a medium range lightweight gun without to much recoil. Really just tossing up whether I change to 6.5 as I already have a 708 and all the components. Also wondering if I did go 6.5 whether to go large or small rifle primer. Is there much difference.
All input appreciated.

Both excellent so personal choice the creed is accurate and easy to load for and theirs a good amount of components around at the minuet for either choice the creed would be easier to shoot on the lighter platform depending on what you feed your 708

Go for 7mm if your already set up for it. I have 5x 6.5s...

What is the barrel twist in the 7mm-08? The 6.5 will be 1 in 8". What projectiles do you want to use? You probably want to think about what you want to do with the rifle that you can't do with your current rifle assuming you are going to keep it. Questions only you can answer.

Will be an all round to medium range rig.
Not sure of the twist in the 708 and the 16" does out me off a bit. 20“ would be better. Will be selling the old rifle

Gun Rack advertising a new 6.5 Creedmoor Howa Lightweight for under $900 if that is a option.

if what I have been reading is even remotely correct we may well be looking at ammo shortages again - so 7mm-08 would need a hard think can I get rounds in a years time - 6.5 Creedmore fast falling out of favour again ammo ?? - I would be looking at .270 and .308 being realistic - but then [I] approach buying firearms quite differently . I look at the quality of the rifle first - caliber second and so many are suitable really for certainly most hunting I do .270 25-06 7x57 6.5 308 even 30-06 all good - GC have some older Sako Finnbears going very reasonable prices and in .270 - barrel back to 20 in and a suppressor and a good quality synthetic stock - cant go wrong

Barry, you lost me when you stated GC had Sako's reasonable priced, never seen it.

Either are a good choice I have a Creedmoor and have had a few 7-08 and .260 I would be happy with either of them
If you have all the dies and loading components for 7-08 it would be easier and cheaper to stay with that if not I would go for the Creedmoor.

Brought a Sako Finnbear 7mm Rem mag on here for $900 including suppressor, that was before the industry down turn, try getting much more than $1200 on T/M for a Sako Finnbear. Last few I've seen haven't sold, GC's prices are for the "un-educated"

If you’re already set up for 7-08, have components for reloading then I’d stick it. Don’t be put off by a 16in bbl on 708, will still get you to 400-500 yds with a decent high BC pill.

Yep.. love my 6mm creedmoor.

Of those you mentioned I'll go with the 20in 6.5 creed. Just cos the lenght.

If you've got the components stick to 7mm08
Ironically you're old one that I love owning will never leave my safe. It's my go to rifle. With 7mm projectiles finally becoming more regular it's a great selling point too.

Unless you've got a real desire to scratch the 6.5 Creed itch and you're not ultra recoil sensitive I don't see why you wouldn't stick to what ya know with the Chai 08. Again I don't hate Creedmoor and alot of guys use it. I've just had great success with my 7mm08 and why change what ain't broke aye?.

To be honest, just pick one and run with it.
You won't find much difference in performance on game with the right projectiles, imo.
6.5 creed has the benefit of a greater selection of factory ammo.
If you reload, that's a mute point.

I was out shooting yesterday with a mate. I was shooting 7mm-08 and him 6.5 Creedmore and we were both happily ringing a gong at 415 yards. IIRC we were dialling a similar amount. Personally I would buy whatever is best value and spend on a flash scope.
However if you already have all the reloading gear for 7mm then that seems to answer the question. Anecdotally rifles chambered in 7mm-08 seem to sell a bit cheaper 2nd hand, maybe they are less popular at the moment due to perceived ammo shortages?
I'm no calibre snob but don't really get the 6.5 Creedmore craze. In theory the 7mm-08 is a flatter shooting cartridge anyway? IMO a nice trigger and a quality scope play more of a role in accurately shooting popular centrefire calibres than the calibre itself anyway.

If you got a L61R Finnbear for $900 that's very good value, a lot of rifle for the money

Whats your current 708 set up

My understanding is that the small primer versions of the 308 family were introduced to allow a stronger base and hotter loads for target shooting. @Friwi , @Cyclops and @grandpamac would be able confirm if thats right.

Check what extra gear you’d need to handle SR primers: pocket reamr, flash hole tool, seating stem and so on.

From mh experience

6.5x47 large primer gets about 30fps more on same load
Magnum large about 65fps more, but more constant speeds as either small or large primer
Remington magnum primers vs cci and Winchester

I've never needed an excuse. But on my last get everything out of the safes for a clean I finally decided I have enough rifles and I need to shoot the ones I've already got more:thumbsup:

Pretty much any small primer lapua brass that arrives in the country get snatched away.
It must bring something extra to those who use such brass.
As an aside, and provided you are careful on how you label your ammo,such brass can be necked down to 7mm for the 7-08. Improving slightly its performances.

I've only ever used "palma" small rifle primer cases in 308.
Initially to keep things simple for me as I was target shooting with a 223 & 308.
Small rifle primer for both made purchasing easier.

From what I have read and other discussions there is a suggestion that the "palma" small rifle primer 308 case is thicker in the base and can be reloaded more times. I'm up to 20 reloads for my oldest palma cases. Only a couple with split necks out of 1000 cases. That said these are Lapua cases and one pays for and gets quality in those cases.

No extra gear was/is required for me.
Lyman E-ZEE primer (after I wore out my Lee primer) and I don't ream or treat primer pockets - ultrasonic cleaning does that.

6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. Almost exactly the same powder capacity as a 308, and therefore a 7mm08, and the deer won't know it's not a Creedmoor!

So it’s a 7 mm08 for the win :)

Find yourself a nice Sako 75 and keep it

Remember if you go Creedmoor, you have to grow a manbun too. Stick with what you know 708.

nah get a 270 sako be it an AV or earlier finnbear 75 0r 85 and keep it you will have the best

Best to stick with 7mm08 if you already have the components for it, End of the day its all much of a muchness sub 400y. Besides, most of the "old guard" on here will have you believe a 6.5mm bullet will struggle to put down a rabbit on a good day, much less a deer. Especially if its shot from a creedmoor.
