2950 to 3050..... in terms of functional performance from what I understand.... its about the only one of the 6.5's that i havent owned.
Had a 6.5x55BJAI that i ran at just over 3K with 140s but the 6.5x284 should have edged that by a fraction..
Just built a short 6.5SLR 16.5" barrel and it looks like about 2800fps with 130's. Had a 6.5x47 and it run at about 2750 with 140's out of a 20" barrel. Crazyman had a strong 6.5x55 Sako that he was running at 2900 with 140's. Had a 260 Rem in Sako 85 running Superformance with 143 ELD's at about 2850 ex Dale..
I like my 6.5's:D
Currently building a 6.5 Saum that should run 140's up to around 3200 for a bit more powder in a 22" barrel..
@chainsaw, your 284 will still be better ;-)
Ya dreamin...
SAUM won’t get 3200 in a 22” barrel.
264 win mag has a 26” and Kiwi Greg’s SAUM has the same length was not getting 3200 with 130’s.
Nothing is free and but you can get high velocity with the 264 with RL33 and 140’s 3250-3300...
I've managed 3503fps with with a 140 and RL33 but makes brass single use. It's happy as at 3350
Maybe... but the SAUM seems to have quite a bit of variation in performance from rifle to rifle. Some struggle to get over 3K and then find speed increasing after a couple hundred rounds... most running the GAP versions seem to settle around 3100 for the 140 and a little bit more for the 130, but those are not screwed up performance wise.
Personally I will probably run the SAUM with a 22 barrel and 130's at hopefully a touch over 3K and still have some barrel life.
Beaker - SAUM on a Lone Peak Ti, Bartlein 2B and Manners EH8 with a Bix N Andy Tacsport trigger..
Oh - so just like a 270, for some reason I seem to remember that 3000 with a 130 is the standard load . . . .
What powders best for 140 pills ?
Ok long ball here.
6.5 300 WBY surely that'd take the cake for the 6.5s?
If not and call me old fashioned but the hell does a crudmore do that a swede can't do better?
swede can't fit in a short mag box.
is that it whats a 6.506 like then performance wise
love my 6.5s got a small herd of them
If you are going to muck around with a 6.5 and want some speed to keep you happy, then look at a decent barrel length regardless of what sized case is pushing it. The 6.5 is one bore diameter that greatly benefits from a few inches....
Over a labradar my 24" barreled 6.5x 284 is at 2950 with the 140 EH and 2225. The 143 elxd had a good node at 3000 with RL 23 but the case head expansion on the Lapua brass was a little more than I like, the bergers where a more consistent in grouping and a little less pressure so Ill stick with those.
The 260 (mine) does 2900 with 140 at 20” so need to be comparing apples with apples with regard to barrel length, comparisons between Nashi and a Red delicious is just plain silly.
22in 6.5x55, 140gr @ 2840fps
26in 6.5-284 @ 3000fps
both 2209
My 6.5 x 284 with a 20" would only do 2800fps with a 130grn which I could easily get with a .260.

the speed is only one of the important numbers. Can't really compare a 308 shooting 130's to a 260 shooting 130's. The 308 would have to be shooting 170+g pills to be close the 6.5 's bc.
Real 6.5 fans know that Creedmore and 6.5x47 Lapua dominate the 6.5mm catagory with the availability of quality small rifle primer pocket brass it can be loaded to higher pressures with faster burning powders for better velocities and efficiency with the option of running shorter barrels if wanted.
Here comes the pissing contest....
@Kiwi Greg you need to do a 6.5PRC as well
I see that these are made in 6.5PRC. Maybe a cheaper way of getting into one?

6.5x55AI 147 ELDM out of a 28inch criterion 3048fps - by changing the seating depth from 85 thou to 15 thou I get 3085fps. And this isn't at max pressure.
RL23 is the powder im using. 3000fps was the goal and im past that from the start really.
