    6.5 Creedmoor advice

Once this lock down is over i am going to be looking at buying the bergara extreme hunter, was going to get it in 308 as i know bugger all about the 6.5 but maybe for my type of hunting the 6.5 may be better?? I hunt mainly open tops and tussock country. Tahr and Deer. So most shots between 150-400m i dont attempt anything past 400. Anyones thoughts be helpful. Cheers.

    Both are fantastic
6.5creed is a 308 case with the shoulder bumped back a little and necked down to 6.5
The creed and 308 are very efficient
The bigger question is what bullet do you want to run?
140gr ish high bc for the 6.5
175gr high bc bullet for the 308

The 308 will also recoil more if you are recoil shy

To 400m the 308 is fine with good knock down energy...The 6.5 is good when chasing fine accuracy and reaching out to longer ranges....or if you want less recoil.

Yes would go 7mm08 but thats not an option with the bergara. Will be buying factory ammo, heard people saying the 143 gr eldx goes good in the 6.5, which would knock over a bull tahr easy enough with good shot placement. I suppose the 6.5 would give me the option of stretching to longer range if i ever wanted to down the track. The rifle im looking at also comes with 18” barrel. I would run a dpt on it also.
    cheers guys.

    308. I have a 6.5 but for knockdown power I wouldn't go past a 308 especially as you are dealing with tahr. 150/165sst or hornady precision hunter 178eldx. Fine up close and smash out to 400 no worries

I would still go 6.5, I knocked over this guy with my .260 shooting 143 ELDX at 500 yards and there is bugger all difference between the .260 and the Creedmoor.

Its all in the head coz the tahr won’t notice
    Just saying

You can’t kill anything deader than dead hunting is more about shot placement than anything else
If you put a 140 out of a 260/creedmoor and a 178 out of a 308 into the same spot on a similar size animal at similar distance you wouldn’t notice the difference

Hell even a 120gn of good Construction out of 6.5 will do 95% of hunting to 400 in nz

Cool thanks for the feedback guys a bit more to think about, maybe the creedmoor would be a better option, although i am sure i am over thinking it as per usual. Cheers

Something to consider; with an 18" barrelled 6.5 CM there is a fair amount in velocity loss compared to an 18" .308.

I've got both the 6.5 and 308, prefer the my 7x57 over both,
agree with 10-ring, if chopping and suppressing go 308, and there is heaps of guys running a 16-18" 308 or 708, with a suppressor your only 20-22" in length, so still compact and easy handling,
either caliber is a fine choice for NZ game.

If you start reloading with an 18" Creedmoor you will still get over 2700fps with the 143 ELDX
