    6.5 thoughts...

Righto team, want some thoughts and feedback on a couple of rifles, both being Tikka T3 something I've never used nor are the calibres...

    1. A 6.5 SAUM (yes @Kiwi Greg build)(owned by someone else) all fluted in wood stock 22in barrel, dies and some brass

    2. 6.5 x 55 again all fluted in synthetic stock 20.5in barrel with GW Durallium Supp

I like wood, but the cost between the 2 at $600 is a big point the first being more expensive, I like the possibilities of long range with the SAUM, mind you I guess the x55 isn't far off, need to do a little more research, however thoughts from you lads would be appreciated.

I'm thinking of something to fill the void after selling my .270, with a bit more than my .243 but not anywhere near as bulky as my Rem 700LR .300WM. For use in thicker bush but having more dropping power if I have a longer shot (300m +)

    Cheers Craig

Hey I have a T3 in 6.5 x55 and I'm very happy with it. Especially good calibre if you are into reloading. One thing I have heard is that shortening the barrel isn't always a good idea with this cal however - that T3 with the synthetic stock has had an inch taken off, yes? Not that that's very much. Just something to bear in mind.

Horse power is king at longer ranges.

The 6.5x55 isn't a great leap in any direction from the 243.

the 6.5 saum would fit nicely between .243 and the 300wm

    Big difference in HP between a 6.5 x 55 & 6.5 Saum.

The 6.5 x 55 is a great round but lacking a bit in grunt for LR hunting duties.

The 6.5 x 55 will be cheaper everywhere though, if that's a consideration.

    Interesting comments..thanks

I want killing power if the need for stretching the legs comes about, I'm used to .270 reload recoil so imagine the SAUM may be similar (correct me if I'm wrong)

Sounds like your build may be my best option @Kiwi Greg she is a great looking bit of kit

I'll be reloading, so Greg I might be in touch should I pick this up, just need to play with some funds...

Yes. Even at 350-400 yards the 6.5x55 can be a slow killer at times. I've used it on 100s of animals.
Its not the wonder-round its cracked up to be. Just a good medium capacity case like a whole group of others. A slight edge over some others because of BC and SD, but not much. For belting down animals, the 308 and 165 grn and a full case will eclipse it.

If you want to knock them down emphatically, go for more horse power.

    I wouldn't buy a 6.5x55 with a 20" barrel, I also wouldn't buy a 6.5saum for a bush/chance of a longer shot gun either. I would if I wanted it for a longer range rifle.
Reading your last sentence, though I hate to admit it, a stock 7mm 08 sounds ok, but if it was me I buy a 22" barrelled 308 or a 30 06.

I'm biased, but I would say SAUM (cause I have one)

wont do anything at close range your 6x55 wont do but you will have a bit more poke if the shot is less than perfect and further

    LOVE IT!!

Had a x55 and found it a wee bit anaemic so went to the 264 win mag which is just a belted (and longer) SAUM. But only because I had dies...

+1 to the SAUM, you won't regret that extra flat shooting horsepower on the hill...
