Just curious to hear how the wee 6mm creed goes as a hunting cartridge. The good, the bad? Limitations, effective killing distances, recoil.. etc. Preferably from people who use it.
Is it your go to caliber for all medium game?
Contemplating building one.

Also interested in hearing about real world barrel life , not the PRC crowd who burn down barrels by firing 10 or more rounds in 90 seconds time after time all day long , but in more of a hunting usage / ownership scenario .

Sure. Apart from the twist rates. The creed obviously has the advantage of being a shorter case making the 108gr eldm more viable in a short action. And that most 243s twist rates can't handle much over 90gr. Was just interested to hear how the 108s deal to animals. Cheers

The new sako 1/8 twist 243 will be a bit of a game changer.

Are tikka making a 6mm creed?
Does make me wonder how the c.o.l with the 108 will work in the short action 243s though.

I have one "in build" now, it's been on the go for a while. It started as a 6 ARC but in talking with Greg from Custom Guns one day he allowed that running a bigger cartridge "cool" is much better than a small one going hot. I've had a good run with the ARC on game running 103s at 2880 ( and yes that a very hot brass destroying load) but when a short length "custom" action came up at a price and time I could afford it made much more sense to pull the ARC barrel and open it out to 6CM.

The extra "easily obtained" 150-200 fps (with consequent energy boost) will extend my effective hunting range from 350ish with the ARC to over 500M with no weight penalty, and probably similar barrel life. Brass life is also a lot better, easier and cheaper. At the expense of about 20 gns of bulk 2209 per shot (so effectively cost neutral on the ARC powder).

The Zermatt action I have is just so much smoother and refined than any of the mini alternatives like Howa's and CZ's it a no brainer to me. It'll go into a readily obtainable Remmy carbon stock at no practical weight penalty over a mini.

I run 108 ELDM's in my 243 Short action with 1:8 barrel at around 3000 fps. No issue with length, I load at max mag length of around 2.8x" 72-73mm.
Lot of US target shooters run these faster.
nb berger 87 gr hunters also shoot really well but I could not get the 105gr VLD hunters to group as well as I would have liked.

So I can say the 108 gr's kill Fallow and goats and red hinds & spikers. last fallow at 120mt walking up hill away from me bullet went through hip ball joint, paunch, liver, lung, brisket, I found the base under the skin at the front of the chest.
For side on shots on goats I feel they get half way through before they start to open up so if I was only shooting goats I would go back to the 87 gr vld's

NB I'm sure I could run them up to 3100 fps but I don't need too. Some of the new powders have breathed new life into heavy for caliber projectiles. Hodgdon list >2970 fps for 115 gr in 243.

I rate the 6CM! I ran a number of powder ladder tests in excess of 3100fps with Berger Hybrid 105’s and never hit pressure (26” barrel). Just choose a powder weight for the velocity you want and run with it. I ran mine at 2850fps and squeezed 2300 rounds out of my barrel (which is unheard of), but had to nurse it from about 1800 onwards.

Your issue might be in finding Lapua SRP brass though. But if you do, I got 7-8 reloads with no issue and then passed it onto a mate who has put another 3-4 reloads on it so far.

I worked on a brand new tikka t3x super light today in 243, and that one had the 1 in 8” twist barrel.
The 6.5 creedmoor mag from tikka is an M+, so slightly longer than a normal 308 , so that is one solution to seat the bullets a bit further on the 243 case ( short of using an L mag for the 270w). Of course the bolt stop might need a bit of tweaking or swapping over with a long action one.

Interesting. What action is it? And what length barrel are you running?
That's pretty impressive speeds.
I learnt to hunt with the stout little 243 so I still toy with idea of getting another one. I wish tikka would hurry up and bring the 1 in 8 .243 into NZ. I just assumed the 6mm creedmoore was the new improved version of the 243. But maybe I'm wrong. I have a 22-250 and a 7mm08 I'm thinking of selling and building some sort of fast twist 6mm. The do all caliber as they say. How does the 108 go on stags during the roar? Thanks for your input.
