    7mm mag to a 6.5prc?

    Has anyone dropped down from a 7 or 30 cal magnum to a 6.5prc and is happy. Or has anyone been disappointed and gone bigger again. Just curious.

    Yeah, I have. I'm pretty happy. Have set up 4, tikka and Bergara. Limited factory ammo options but the Hornady match stuff seems to like most guns. Really nice to shoot compared to rem mag and ballistically similar at realistic ranges. Kills well. I would say it's less forgiving than a 30 Cal for poor shot placement. But then its more accurate, generally. I'm in Manawatu if you wanted to shoot one. Also, it will lose speed if you cut it too much and turn into a creedmoor, not a bad thing but will effect your max range etc. I have a 24 inch, 22 inch, 21 inch and 20 inch. I would go 22 for an all rounder.

    Cheers for the offer, me mate @199p has a lender if needed. It’s a close call between a saum and 6.5prc. 20inch is a handy length unfortunately, four prcs is madness. The 147 seems to have a good reputation like the 162.

    In my experience the 6.5 has;
    less recoil
    Is inherently accurate. To the point that I found any powder/ pill combo just flat out shot
    Great bc to weight

    The only downside in my limited experience was the animals stood there for way long after being shot. Like up to 30 seconds where as a 7mm would flatten them. I have heard this from others aswell. Just a trade off I guess

    I think the concern is hunting public land north island shooting them on the slip. Anchoring makes them easy to find, the $mm does that. The 6.5 may not. Mind you only using the amax.

    I re chambered my 7-300wsm(serious hitter) to 6.5 prc and am happy, i wont go back to a bigger cal.the 147s going mid 2900s flatten deer as good as the 175 eldxs going 3000+.the impact shock from the eldms is amazing and the prc is such a damn accurate calibre it makes shooting easy.my mate shot his first deer at 400 with it the other night.at the end of the day when long distance animal shooting precision is more important than power.an 147 eldm into the shoulder at 800 yards is going to kill.

    Depends what you want to achieve, i use to have a 6.5 creedmoor it was super accurate, but after shooting about 15 deer and couple bull Tahr with it using factory eldx, they would just run too far before expiring, a lot to do with shot placement i get that but the initial shock was not there. Went back to a 708 for a couple years which was better. Now use a 300wsm and have no issue's, still run on some
    Heart shots as is expected but nothing like the 6.5.
    This may not be an issue to you where you hunt, but in some of the steep country down here it can be the difference between finding the animal or not. The PRC will be better than the creedmoor i get that, but not a lot better.
