Of you're going to keep the barrel long, go for it. I went from 7mm rem mag at 24 inches to 6.5 prc at 20 inches and I regret chopping it.
I've also got a 300wsm now. The 6.5 is far less forgiving on shot placement than the 7mm was, combination of speed and mass of bullet I'm sure. I'm using ELD-X as I did in the rem mag.
In my case the prc has about the same recoil as my old rem mag because it weighs significantly less then the rem mag did.
Still kills deer, longest shot with the prc has been 250 yards, behind the high shoulder spot, tipped over a fallow spike no problem.
300wsm is no slouch, the 208 is a deer slayer, as well as the 215. The 7mm rem mag is my go to , I have a 30nosler. And a 260. I figure a 6.5 prc @2900 with a 147 would work in a 20inch.
