162ELDM are awesome for me being launched at 2970FPS. Have killed reds and fallow from 80 yards to 480. All have dropped on the spot or left a huge blood trail and died within 20 metres.

Can only imagine what a 162eldm would do to a fallow lol
Would probably still be fine on a fallow. I had a couple of blow ups with the 140 nbt at 2650, so far I like the eld m better at all ranges. I've had exit wounds every time. That said all the animals shot with the nbt died quick.

I would probably still chose something stouter for close up stags, but am liking the eld m a lot so far

@Monk how’s the recoil in that setup? I’ve just built the exact same setup. Was only planning on shooting up to 168gr.

I don’t find the recoil bad at all,my daughter who is 10 shoots it no worries. The ssrnz cans seem to soak up abit more recoil than the Hardy can I’ve got as well

Will most likely cut to 18" to get the full superpig look.
It's funny you bring this thread up.

I've had a rem mag, sold it and built my 300 win mag as tops rifle, as I carry my 308 90%of the time of which she is a light clean killing machine I came to the conclusion what if I could have something that's the weight , portability , recoil, length (all the basic attributes of a 308 with less recoil being the exception) but could reach out further ?
The conclusion - 20" 284win. The only real sacrifice being that I see is that factory ammo is non existent however we know for LR stuff one generally reloads anyway irrelevant of calibre.

The 284s are little honeys ! Can't wait for my one(sell my 300 first)

Agreed, love my little 284. 22 inch barrel un suppressed so slightly different to the bush pigs. Its fluted with a stug stock, weighs bugger all and shoots 160tmks half moa on a good day. Plenty of info on here which encouraged me to do mine

    I'd heard all about em.

Wasn't till I shot one it was like I had a new set of eyes in my head.

Suppressed 284win has virtually no Recoil I just couldn't believe it.

I think I'f you had to have one rifle to do it all for hunting atleast of medium and big game here in NZ with one gun the 284 would be pretty close to the top of the list.

I have a brand new/unfired Tikka stainless barrel in 7mmRM available if thats of any use to someone for a bushpig/rebarrel?

    Also a new T3x stock
If it's not a first round hit you need to practice more

It's funny but the 284 is such a good round yet no one has done a factory rifle for it for a long time and its ballistic twin the 280 which was offered in a wider range of factory rifles is suffering the same fate. Try finding a Remington bdl ss 280 these days .Rocking horse shit is easier to find.

If its a 280 (or its ballistic twin the 284) you think you need then you can go with the original and not loose a thing, yup 7x64, mine shoots 160's at over 2900 (accuracy load is at 2820, under 3/4 moa day in month out from a Brno) and it pre-dates anything mentioned in this thread (unless I've missed something). Just goes to prove the selling of hunting rifles/calibers is a fashion industry. (7x64 was introduced in 1912)

Of cause it is ,gun writers and magazines and firearms companies work it just like the any other trend. The bush pig concept is a classic example ,NZ hunter mag builds one writes about it and bingo suddenly everyone is reaming their 7mm-08's out to 284 and cutting barrels down . The creedmoore is a classic example it wont do anything any better than 260 but it was marketed perfectly ,where the 260 was not . The new 6.5 prc is a re invention of the the 6.5 rem mag just marketed better and chambered in more rifles. Carbon fiber stocks, suppressors, super lite rifles all just fashion trends . Makes you wonder how we ever coped with our old heavy long barreled rifles in 303 . I'l bet the deer haven't noticed our trendy new guns.
    Have fun

Dont waste your time chasing every last fps, it doesnt matter in the real world, it wont make a difference, all it will do is cause head aches and frustrations. And dont listen to silly old cunts

While the 7x64 is the euro equivalent of the 280, and is a damn fine calibre, in my experience owning both 7x64, 280ai and 284s it runs 100-150 fps behind the 280ai, and 50-100 FPS behind 284. Love my 7x64 - it’s a old school HEYM wood and blued, superb example of German gunsmithing, but it ain’t light. So for most hunting trips, especially bush & rain I take short barrel light 284. Tops hunting the 280ai.

The creedmoor fits properly in a short action with long pills, carbon fiber is lighter while still remaining rigid and supressors significantly reduce the amount of damage to your hearing.

While I agree that fashion/marketing has a big say in what is adopted and what isn't in the public market, all the things you listed above represent incremental improvements to a specific function. I really don't see how this is a bad thing.
