@kiwijames Nice grp. What speed you getting with RL16 ? I've been running the old AMAX's with RL17 in 22in Tikka 284 for 2930fps for 0.5moa grps.

Yeah pretty happy as this is really only the first dozen shots fired. Don't know speed yet. I'm of the understanding RL16 and RL17 are pretty similar powders for pace so Im expecting 2800+. Worked up from 51g and it tightened up nicely as I got warmer. From a 20" barrel.
How do you find the 162 Amax works for terminal ballistics? I've shot them in my Rem Mag and they go well. I expect they should be fine in the 284 even up close and I still have enough to not have to look (yet) for more.

yeah, perfect fit for short barrelled 284. Have not had chance to use them for anything real close in, but 100+ yards consistently good, so long as you're careful with shot placement. I tend to go for lung shots when ever possible - dont go far without oxygen.

That is still hauling along nicely. Did it effect the accuracy?
I am super impressed with the 180 eldm, it packs a good punch. Keen to try the 195 berger at some stage

I d be very wary of using them at very close range .I found the 155 amax quite flange able , they blew a large hole on entry hole which was enough for an unlucky porker but on a big animal it might not cause enough damage to kill cleanly.

Yea man he started at 24 with his i started at 26 he cut to 21" as he really wanted an all in one rifle still a tack driver he reckons. I just about cut mine after a ruahine bush hunt a month ago it was at dpt monday of lockdown announcement i chickened out and the good buggers got it back to me tuesday morning un scared. I decided a second rifle was better than cutting the big banger so now its a dedicated southisland rifle stripping stags and bull tahr. Very efficent very powerful and a kitten to shoot. I was very glad to get it back un cut in the end far sooner the second smaller rifle for the tight stuff for the record i was going to go 22" and expected roughly 2950fps 180 berger 69gn rl26 fed 210s

    Cheers

Ive got a little 16" .284 t3 and love it. Mind you at that short its probably blowing half the powder out the barrel before its burnt so I may aswell have a 308 or similar.! Am getting around 2750 with 150 lrabs. Its nice and short and a joy to carry around but I feel it lacks the grunt for the 500m plus stuff. Anyone here using a 7wsm?

Before my 284Win the R93 was a 7-08Rem. It got the chop to about 19" IIRC and it only shot better. So well I used it too much and wore it out (after about 15 years of service). 2 from 2 for the chop job on a Blaser

Was just re reading this thread and saw your question re 7mmwsm @tonyd . Loaded max adi load in a friend's 24" rem 700 with 162eldx for 2940fps~. Only shoots about an inch but ES is reasonably good from memory. Verified to 500m but he has only shot a few sika up close with the load so far which didn't disappoint

Yeah nice one, since that post I have had a 21" barrel fitted, spits out 162s not to bad and managed to stretch the barrel on a recent hunt too, just under 900m bull tahr and 716m stag, the .284 seems to go alot better with the new longer barrel that's for sure!
